Lerch is a fish in search of a new friend and while pebbles, bubbles and that undersea statuette have no interest, he eventually finds a new friend to swim, swim with. James Promios is such an underrated talent--his characters are expressive and his writing is witty, hilarious and sweet all at the same time.

Lerch is goldfish who wants a friend but it is difficult since he's the only fish in his tank. He decides to search for a friend so he swims around his tank. He talks to the gravel, the plastic undersea diver, and the bubbles, but sadly none of them response to him. When he starts to feel that he's as lonely as a fish can be (in a beautiful empty two-page spread), a cat outside the tank comes and talks to him. Young reader will think that the cat will eat Lerch when he calls him Lunch instead of Lerch, but the end turns into a beautiful love story when Lerch finds a girl fish in the other tank. The large font, the bright color, and the few words that are used in this book, make this simple story of friendship and love really accessible to young readers½

This is a fun book that the K-3 children would enjoy. The bold illustrations and text catches the readers eye because everything is huge. The illustrations are bright and colorful. Most children like books like this one.

This book is about a lonely fish who is having trouble finding a friend and someone to talk to. After many attempts a cat put him in another fish bowl with another fish. He ended up not only finding a friend to swim and talk to but also fall in love with. This is a great book to help children realize that they may seem lonely at times or have trouble fitting in at school, sports, etc but to never give up.

Swim! Swim! tells a story of a lonely fish who is looking for a friend. Every time he encountered something new, he would try to make friends with it. None of the items would respond until a hungry cat came along and swooped him up. The little fish thought he was going to be lunch, but the cat brought him to someone he thought the fish would like, a new friend. In the end, the fish found friendship and love. This book can teach students to never give up, a friend will always come along at the right time.

Lerch and Dinah become friends.

Personal reaction
I really thought this book was really great. I really liked how the fish talked to the bubbles then I thought the cat was going to eat the fish but the cat just want them to meet each other.

classroom extension.
1, the students can make their own picture of an aquarium with fish and pebbles etc.

2. This could be a great book to read at the beginning of school year and then have children introduce themselves to each other.

This book is about a fish looking for a friend, the pebbles won't talk to him, the bubbles won't talk to him, the astronaut in his tank won't talk to him but the cat ready to eat him for lunch will! The cat puts him in a bowl with "dinner" (another fish!) and they fall in love! The cat finds this sweet and decides not to eat either of them! So the two hold fins & swim swim swim. P.S. his little red hat is SO cute! This would be a great addition to the fishing prop-box I made last semester.

This cartoonish book is a fun, quick read-aloud, which I have used when the class is having a rough day and we just need to have some fun together. The illustration style just begs for students to learn and emulate it in a quick art lesson.

A book about a goldfish; Lerch who lives by himself and becomes lonely. He asks many different things to be his friend until he finally finds a fish like him to be his friend. This can teach children to include everyone and to be friends with everyone, no one wants to be all alone like Lerch at school.

Featured at An Abundance of Books

I don't know how I missed this book but I'm so glad my coworker found it and added it to the library order. Swim! Swim! is funny and engaging picture book that kids of all ages will enjoy. Our lonely hero Lerch is simply looking for a friend. He asked the pebbles, the sunken diver, and the bubbles from the water filter to be his friend, but they just ignored him. (He even tried talking in bubble, but to no avail.)

Just when Lerch thought it was official that nobody liked him, someone popped up that really seemed to like him. The cat. It's ok that the cat thinks his name is "Lunch" instead of Lerch, he could work with that. The exchange between Lerch and the cat was really cute and is bound to have younger readers yelling warnings at the page. Just when it looks like Lerch is about to be eaten, the cat drops him and says "Meet dinner!". It seems our hero has been dropped into a new fish bowl containing Dinah. It's love and friendship at first sight (even the cat says "Awww.") and they swim around happily ever after while holding each other's fin.

Proimos' simple but energetic illustrations and exuberant story are reminiscent of Mo Willems' Elephant & Piggie series. Plus this is my type of story - a great read aloud that lets you throw in all types of sniffling and assorted dramatics. The text is simple enough that younger readers can read to their family (some words might require prompting). I would also recommend it to some of my older elementary students to read to their younger siblings.

Lerch is a lonely fish who is desperate for a friend. Since Lerch is in a fish tank all alone he askes the bubbles and pebbles to be his friend. Then his cat owner drops in a new friend fish for him and they become best friends. This is a book that has good humor and shows children how everyone needs a friend.½

A fish tries to make friends with objects in his aquarium, but when all else fails, he thinks he may be able to befriend the cat. The events that follow are confusing, but the end is pleasing.

“Swim, Swim,” by Lerch is a short picturebook about a lonely fish looking everywhere in his habitat for a friend. After failed communications with the pebbles, figurine, and bubbles in his fish tank, he is dropped by a cat into another fish tank to meet a new fish friend. They swim happily together to end the story.

“Swim, Swim,” seems like a fun book that would be enjoyed by preschoolers up to second grade level readers. I found that the bold illustrations and text would really keep the children entertained. The repetition of words like, “swim, swim swim,” or “blub, blub, blub,” would also make the story a fun read. I also enjoyed the moral; that even if one can find themselves lonely sometimes, there is always someone out there to keep them company.

After reading “Swim, Swim,” it might be fun for a group of kids to each design their own fish to create a school of fish that could all keep each other company. It would be important to stress friendship and companionship in this exercise to teach kids that no one likes to be alone. It might also be a good book to read before putting together a fish tank, as elements of a fish tank were included in this story.

Poor Lerch. He's a snazzy-looking, friendly sort of fish but he's alone in a tank and feeling awfully forlorn. Desperate for a friend, he approaches the pebbles but all they offer him is stony silence. The bubbles in the tank make noise but all they say is, "Blub." Featuring lots of opportunities for making predictions, there's nothing "fishy" about the fun in Swim! Swim!

I discovered this book right before I sent my order list and hastily squished it on! I've looked at a couple other books by James Proimos, including Todd's TV, that didn't quite work for me. This one does! Very much so. When I opened it up, I just had to start reading it out loud and I can't wait to perform it with a storytime group!

Lerch, a little fish with a big mouth, wants a friend. He swim, swim, swims up and down, looking for one. The pebbles? No. The diving figure? No. The bubbles? Oh no! The cat? The cat! Why not? And if the cat wants to call him "Lunch" instead of Lerch, well...

There's not really a logical storyline here, but who cares? We just want to read it with funny faces and make all the kids yell "Swim Swim" in unison!

Postscript: We read this in storytime and made swimmy fish motions with our hands - up or down according to Lerch's direction. Hilarious! Delightful!

Verdict: Highly recommended. Buy it for your library, read it in storytime, read it to your staff (with appropriate funny faces) and perform it for bored 5th grade classes. Snicker.
