The story has a familiar ring to it, and its style is similar to "The House that Jack Built." The mouse is adorable (like when he is pleading with the farmer for hay or wearing a headband on the jog to the butcher). I also liked how the conversation is incorporated into the illustrations.

Pros: Children will enjoy hearing the story as you tell it, but also listening to the lyrical narrative accompanied by music on the CD.

When I opened the book, I expected this to be *just* the nursery rhyme. So I was tickled when a story began to unfold. The text is simply presented and done in such a way that this could be an easy reader when kids are starting to learn to read. The illustrations are wonderful and remind me of Ezra Jack Keats' The Snowy Day.

Pros: Colorful, patchwork illustrations engage young readers in this new version of a traditional nursery rhyme.
