The volume follows Brackenhal's journey with Merralea and Brookwind. There are missing punctuation marks throughout the book. Initially, it seems the characters are humanised and it's often difficult to remember whether they are actually human or wolf-like animals, particularly as the book references to cubs and raising a fox cub 'as their own' and yet Brookwind has a scarf. Later it's clear they are humans. Nonetheless, the world-building is visually descriptive and this is a plot-driven story.
