Arthurian Literature in the Middle Ages. A c… von Roger Sherman Loomis
This is a truly wonderful and scholarly book. If you are interested in the Arthurian legend, this must be by your bedside. Chapter 28, `Miscellaneous French Romances in Verse' by Alexandre Micha is excellent. This must be in my top ten books ever.
Loomis was one of the great Arthurian and Grail scholars of his age, but his commitment to proving the Celtic roots of Grail lore grows tiresome quickly in this book. It's as though you've been buttonholed at party by someone who won't stop until they've explained their theory about the Rosicrucians or fluoridation. There's much interest to be had along the way because the man knew his stuff, but it's not balanced account. I'm going start Richard Barber's book soon, which I understand is more restrained and thorough.… (mehr)
The enduring stories of Tristan and Isolt, Aucassin and Nicolette, Gawain, Perceval, King Arthur, and other knights and ladies. Some of them are enchanting.
Relic of my 'Arthurian' phase. Heavy academic tome but at the time it was vital, a leader in its field.
