An interesting blend of western, paranormal , and romance, Sundown is a heartwarming story that reminds the reader that it's okay to be different. A little bit of kindness and companionship can soften the hardest hearts, as our beloved half-vampire hero learns. Great story!

I started to read this book twice (like, ten pages tops), then got busy doing other things and forgot about it. After reading and loving every other book by this author, I couldn't believe it didn't grab me like the others. Today, I picked it up and decided to read it straight through. I'm so glad I did! The beginning, though slightly dry, is necessary information for the rest of the story, so get through it! The plot is brilliant, and I am no fan of medieval romance. I believe I would feel just as flummoxed as Sarah did, finding herself transported to the distant past. I enjoyed this book so much that I immediately bought the sequel, and started reading it. Steamy sex and wonderful drama, make this book timeless. Loved it!

In the first part of this book, even before the story begins, just after acknowledgments, is The Author's Note. Because the heroine of the story is a victim of domestic violence, Cynthia Lucas takes the time to explain the statistics and reality of Spousal Abuse. She offers information, hotline numbers, and an exhortation to help anyone you suspect is a victim of this heinous crime. I think that is noteworthy, which is why I decided to start my review there.
The story itself was great! A woman runs to the carnival to escape her sadistic husband, and meets a real genie (an Ifrit Jinn), who is nearly powerless, and working as a stage magician. Initially, she signs on as his assistant to make some more money before running again. As her trust for him grows, so do their feelings, and also his powers. I don't want to give away any more of the story, so let me just say this: Smoke and Mirrorz is a fantastically suspenseful story, containing magic and true love. I enjoyed it very much, and would recommend it to anyone who could use a little romance in their lives.
