“In…1976 a…non-masonic body, the Herzog August Library at Wolfenbüttel near Brunswick, held a symposium on Secret Societies with special emphasis on those of the 18th Century. These papers have now also appeared in print in two volumes totalling more than one thousand pages. The Master of Quatuor Coronati Lodge, Bayreuth ( German Constitution ) and Br. Fritz Bolle from the Supreme Council of the German Ancient and Accepted Rite had been invited. The latter presented a most interesting paper on the desirability of closer cooperation between masonic research workers and the non-masonic historians. I contributed an essay on ‘The Function of Secrecy in Freemasonry’ and Professor Christian Ludz gave an introductory survey on the subject and stressed the importance of the sociological and political aspects of secret societies, with their tendency to conspiracy so widespread on the Continent. This aspect of Freemasonry is not normally treated by English masonic authors but represents a vital part of masonic history from France far eastward to Russia. The second volume is devoted entirely to the Strict Observance Rite and will undoubtedly be the first authoritative work on this remarkeble phenomenon in masonic Templarism.
