Interesting, well written - but not quite what I was expecting, There are evocative descriptions of the flora and fauna in the forests of West Africa and a number of amusing anecdotes - but, for all this, I am left wondering what he actually did (as a job) for the 30 or so years covered by this memoir. I would have liked to have learnt far more about his day to day existence, how he lived and worked, what his objectives and accomplishments were, and to what end and whose benefit. I am not even clear who was employing him. However, despite these cavils - this is an enjoyable work.½
