This book is intended for the parent who, although not necessarily a gardener, feels that their child ought to learn about green and growing things and connect with nature and the food chain in a personal way. It does not assume that the parent has any knowledge about starting a garden, or indeed, any place to start a garden (there is a section about finding garden space). It will take the reader step by step through such topics as choosing vegetables and seed varieties to grow (the latter may be outdated due to the 35+ years since the book was published), growing plants from seed (some good tips about improvising a heater for germination here, coupled with the caveat that once germinated, seedlings do better at a lower temperature), and more. Not for me (a grandparent with years of gardening with and without children) but I might have found it useful when it was first published, around the time my first child was born.
