I think this could have been a lot better. While the artwork and main character are cute, I think the plot gets super muddled and doesn't really present a great messages, especially for young girls. It feels like there is almost this choice that has to be made of being "sweet and invisible" or "fierce and unliked", which doesn't sit well with me. There are a couple little good moments but I wouldn't recommend this for young readers.

Millie is tired of being bullied and finally decides to get even with her peers that treat her badly. She in turn behaves badly and soon realises she doesn't feel good doing it. So she begins making better decisions to make others feel better including herself.

Millie has been fierce-free all summer so her mother agrees to let her have a sleep-out in a tent in the backyard with her friends. Of course all does not go smoothly during her sleep-out, and Millie needs to often force herself to control her fierceness until it is absolutely necessary to frighten off a scary dog. Colorfully and humorously illustrated, this picture book demonstrates the importance of self-control in an understandable way for this age group.

Genre- I would say fantasy because this little girl is really imagining life an a unexpected way.
Age- Primary, Intermediate
Summary- This book was about a little girl that if she behaved then she go to have her dream sleep out in her back yard with her friends. She does want anything to go wrong with her sleep out so she's going to try really hard to keep her fierce attitude in. While the night is going on everything keeps going wrong, Her friends eat the last s'more and they don't like the scary movies... and on and on then she finally gets so upset with everything she lets her fierce side come out and she ends up saving the day because know she's not scared anymore.
Critique- At first I didn't really understand this book because I thought that she was going to be able to control her behavior and the night would go good because she listened to herself and her parents about the way she acted but then I realized that no this little girl can show that she can stand up for herself even when her friends are scared and get things done and make sure everyone is safe. The moral of the book is a pretty empowering to young girls. I would have this book in my classroom of army students to read.
Illustration- the art was created by using Winsor & Newton watercolors on Lanaquarelle watercolor paper.
