This was your typical formulaic feel-good story, but it featured an interracial relationship between a white athiest Canadian woman and an Indian Sikh Canadian man, who struggle to merge their different worlds to find their HEA. This especially interested me because I had been in interracial relationships myself, so the concept really resonated with me. I am not Indian nor Sikh, but I come from a family with a very traditional Asian background and hold fast to our traditions.
So I really understood the struggle between Becky and Dev, and especially Dev’s struggle to choose between family and well, his own life. I loved learning about the Sikh culture and how an outsider may struggle to relate with a culture entirely different from their own. And all those food descriptions! Yum!
The only thing I didn’t love was…Becky. We were deep in her head for the entire novel, and she came off as quite bratty and annoying at times. It might be that I can’t relate to her deep desire for marriage, but there were moments that I forgot she was almost 30 and thought she was a teenager. The characters were overall fun to read about, especially Becky and Dev’s friends and family, but I felt like I only knew them on a shallow level. There were a couple roadblocks thrown in toward the last half of the middle and toward the end, but they were resolved really quickly. And there were some formatting errors throughout (sometimes there were two dialogues next to each other so I wasn’t sure who was speaking).
Overall a fluffy read and it was a great story to read on vacation!… (mehr)
