What I've come to learn about H.J. Marshall's books is that they are full of twists and turns and the unexpected and no not all of them are good. This author writes some really dark things and they are all relatable and realistic. Sure you can read Jackal as a standalone but I really don't recommend it. If you want to understand everything going on because of how all the books crossover you have to read the series Embattled Dreams before starting the Death Hounds MC series. Part of Jackal's story is left over from the last book in the series. Jackal knew Violet since a young age when Gladys and her husband adopted her. She kind of became Jackals little sister in a way. In the last book we learn that Violet has an identical twin sister Rose that she was separated from in foster care when they were young. Violet ended up with the happy family that every child could want while her sister Rose ended up in the nightmare. They know this because they saved her daughter Iris and that had Violet determined to find her sister once and for all. Jackal swore to her that he would find Rose and he did. He found a completely broken woman who was just trying to survive for her daughter and he felt an instant connection to her. Jackal was everything Rose could need to put herself back together again and with him came his army of brothers who would hurt anyone that threatened her or her daughter ever again. Rose had been secluded since she was very young and that made her very awkward in social situations but with Jackal by her side with his patience and love helped her learn things she never did before. Even with the past coming for her she strives to be the woman and mother Jackal and Iris needs. Every character in this book - good and bad - is there for a purpose. This series is so intertwined that you have to read from the beginning to understand all their purposes and how they strive to save the innocents that are wronged from their nightmares coming back for them. The men of the Death Hounds might be looked at as the bad guys but they really are the heroes no one knows about and that's how they like it. They do anything and everything to protect their family and the ones they care about. Having the outside help of Devlin and James just makes them stronger. H.J. Marshall writes some really dark stuff that could trigger a lot of people but it is brilliant. I don't know how anyone could love these books. Hatchet's book is up next and I can't wait to see where this story goes cause it is no where near done.… (mehr)

The premise of this was good but I found myself struggling to stay engaged. That was disappointing considering how good the blurb was. I just wanted more. It had some good moments but I needed the story fleshed out more.

Not for me.

For the safety gang, although there were no details during the separation both have dated.
Just before the Hero and heroine meet again the Hero has had a hookup with a random "gym-whore" i think he describes her as. It's said by the heroines friend Josh “Were you really going to be okay if you walked out with your flavor of the night to see Caroline working out in your gym, oblivious to your escapades. How do you think she would have taken it that the first time she sees you, you’re leaving with your latest hookup?"
The heroine has stated to her friend that she's not the ONS type and has struggled to move on after the breakup.
The Hero later says "I’ve had sex with six other women but I have let more than that give me a blowjob. I don’t sleep with women anymore, but I do use them to get off. "
The heroine says she has slept with more.
Not my cup of tea.
