Jude Mason

This is a story that, I suspect, will polarize people. It has some interesting elements in it which, for me, made a somewhat uneasy mix. Others may really like it, for the balance Jude Mason has achieved is not an easy one to obtain. Only those who have lost a loved one can really understand the emotional turmoil a survivor goes through when he finds a new love ‘too quickly’ after the death of the first one. The thing is, there is no ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ time to fall in love. As difficult as this may be to accept, it is a very simple truth and one that Jude explores in this story.

Sam is the narrator, so we only get to see his point of view. He’s very observant, though, so I don’t think we miss much. His thought process and methods to get Greg to open up again are definitely – unconventional. Some may call him callous, but I think he truly has Greg’s best interests at heart. As the Dom in this newly forming relationship, he takes the lead – but Greg has to follow to make this work. And he does.

If you like stories with a twist, ones that are a little beyond what may be conventionally accepted as ‘appropriate’, you may find this an interesting mix. On the one hand it is about dealing with loss, saying goodbye and new beginnings. On the other hand, the way Greg deals with it (Sam calls it ‘sexual therapy’) makes for very hot reading. If you like contradictory stories and unconventional approaches, you may like this short book.
