Listen, child. This is full-stop action with a thin slice of plot pushed into the middle. But it's engaging! The kaiju antagonists get annoying with "no you - reverse uno cards," but the fight scenes are dynamic. The ending is a doozy, so I can't wait to see the fallout.

3.5

This story is so simple but manages to be entertaining. I like the new character addition. The anti-kaiju leader is both a manchild but totally competent.

Also, I'm enjoying Kikoru's character direction. She's more than the spoiled rich girl now.

Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshino really steals the show in the opening chapters as we find out a little about his background and a lot about his level of dedication to his captain. A terrific battle against Kaiju No. 10 full of sacrifice and soldierly comradeship segues into a testing of the strength of various friendships as the status quo gets abruptly topples and protagonist Kafka Hibino faces a new deadly challenge. Good stuff!

Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshino takes the spotlight as he fights first Kaiju No. 8 and then brand-spanking new Kaiju No. 10. There was a nice little lull in the middle for some character interaction, but nothing too interesting occurs.

It's still a good series, but it is starting to coast through on action scenes a little more than I'd like.

I really liked the first volume, but this one loses a little shine as it mostly just repeats the same beats from the first book, right up to the cliffhanger. I still like the characters and the balance of humor to action, so I'm hoping this is just a short sophomore slump and the story breaks out of the loop and starts blazing some trails.

The comradery between Kafka and Ichikawa is so wholesome. I love those older mentor – rookie dynamics though Kafka’s got the same level of expertise as Ichikawa. I hope Ichikawa sticks around.

I purposefully didn’t read the summary, so I thought this was going to be one of “2nd chances” type of stories. Well, color me surprised. The plot took an abrupt twist out of nowhere.

This has my interest as of now, so I’ll read a volume two.

This had one of the most aggressively ~*shonen manga*~ premises of all time, but leaned more heavily towards humor than I usually expect from this type of series in a way that I really enjoyed.

Ooh, this little action adventure serial really pushes my buttons the way a good superhero comic does. The hero is a screw-up with his heart in the right place and a secret that gives him a new shot at achieving the dream he abandoned years before: hunting and destroying the giant kaiju monsters that tore a swath of destruction through his childhood. He has a goofy but devoted sidekick, a childhood friend who has left him in her dust as she climbed the ranks to become captain of a unit of kaiju fighters, and a fun rival in the testing program to join the Japan Defense Force.

There's humor and heroism galore, drama and cheese. An instant favorite. I can't wait for the next volume.

Before reading volume 1: for someone who has never seen Godzilla and/or King Kong (or anything with kaiju) I sure do like stories about monsters...

After reading: ok the pace is still very high but I sorta thought that having some slow moments would be better. I do think I'm only saying that because I'm reading a lot of chapters in one go.

After reading: that was actually really fun! I liked the humour and the main character. I do hope that it will not have some love triangle/harem shenanigans though. That could get creepy very fast. But I'm pleasantly surprised.

After reading: *surprised Pikachu face* still a lot of fun!

I do know what I actually liked in this one. I'm a sucker for a training academy. Also friendship! Yes, I like reading about people who do (dangerous) things for their friends (and they would do the same!)
