In the first part of this volume, "Fighting Bob" rocked Congress for reform and his writings and speeches are featured. His leadership during the Progressive Era included his attack against monopolies, machine politics, and unjust taxes. Although a bit dated, for younger people La Follette is an inspiration who later was described as a "legend of liberalism." A second part of the volume describes La Follette from the words of his contemporaries. Few of those around him were neutral, he inflamed his contemporaries as he burned for reform.
