Najaf Mazari was born in 1971 in a small village near Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan. He left school at age twelve, and apprenticed himself to a master rugmaker. He fled Afghanistan in 2001 in order to escape torture and the genocide of Hazara men and boys in Mazar-e-Sharif carried out by mehr anzeigen the Taliban. He eventually settled in Australia where he now owns a rug shop, selling traditional Afghan rugs. In April 2007, he was granted Australian citizenship. The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif von Najaf Mazari
A story of one man and his family's experiences of the wars and fighting in Afghanistan as an Hazara minority. Najaf's journey to safety and imprissonment in Australia before being allowed to stay, become a citizen and reunite with his family. Written about the period before Nauru became the place of imprisonment for asylum seekers. Interesting to read of the difference between the jailors' attitudes and treatment of prisoners in the two locations as written about in other books.
½Excellent. A moving account of an Afghan refugee, his life and flight to freedom in Australia.
I read this for the Just For Fun Challenge which encourages reading one book a month that has been on the TBR shelf for a long time and without doing a review. I still rated this book though and I loved it.
