A rather strange, unassuming little book, ENTERTAINING AN ELEPHANT, while perhaps a bit overly simplistic, makes a point. It's about the importance of principles and being true to yourself, among other things. It's also about the difference between knowledge and wisdom. The protagonist is a bitter burned-out high-school English teacher who has come up with his own narrow system of how to get through the years until his retirement. He's unhappy and so are his students. And then a small wise man comes along in the person of the school janitor. Gradually he shows the teacher ways to make his own life more meaningful, and in the process become a better teacher. Lesson finally learned, the teacher, Mr. Reaf (almost 'fear' spelled backward), is no longer afraid to change. He begins to get to know his students and to listen to them. In return, they begin to respect him - and, heavens to bestsy - to learn.

The problem is, it's a very 'thin' book in terms of plot and character development. So it's kind of a slog to read. I didn't have to finish it; it only cost me a quarter at a thrift store. But I was curious, so I read it all, and it was worth the price.

Can't say I'd recommend it though. It's just too pedantic, maybe even a bit boring. Something you might have to read in an Education class. Which explains the glowing blurbs on the back cover - almost all from education officials or administrators.
