So I had the chance to see Karl Mecklenburg give one of his motivational speeches before I read this and in my opinion it has heightened the benefits this book provides. Without the speech though this book is a great read for any kids trying to excel in team sports, especially football. For those reading this for his six key elements it still is a good read, but lacks that drive that the speech helps inspire.

I enjoyed his stories during his football days and how each instance has helped develop him to who he was and is today.… (mehr)

NFL Hall of Famer and former Denver Bronco, Karl Mecklenburg, examines the traits that not only make an aspiring athlete successful but anyone with an extravagant dream. It's not just a wish but fiery passion that can drive anyone forward. Mecklenburg shares his personal story that begins with a football game at age 9. From there, he acquired the desire that took him over numerous hurdles, such as losing a college scholarship and starting over at another college until he won another scholarship. After graduation, he ended up as a 12th round NFL draft pick, which forced him to work for the top spot. Overcoming those obstacles took focus and determination. Today, his continual message as a writer and motivational speaker is that all of us can come from behind to reach seemingly impossible dreams.

One of my favorite anecdotes in the book described John Elway's tough climb to success. We now know Elway as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. But years ago, Elway struggled with consistency. The reason for the struggle, according to Mecklenburg, is that he was so naturally talented he probably never needed athletic discipline in high school and college. With coaching and commitment to learning new ways, Elway overcame his weaknesses to win two Superbowls.

Mecklenburg gives us permission to respect and admire professional athletes by pointing out that most retired football players are not in jail, but, rather, are applying principles of their past success in sports to their current professions and charitable projects. He believes the way to make it is through teamwork, courage, honesty and forgiveness, desire, dedication, and goal setting. There is much practical wisdom in this book, as well as entertaining anecdotes that can motivate anyone to get up and go after anything.
