2.5 stars // I like that this book opens up conversations about feelings, but I'm always confused by the green monster. Being scary isn't an emotion, and I don't know that I want to encourage my children to try and act scary.

The rhyming text is great -- very fun to read aloud. But I do have some hesitations about this book:

1. I'm not sure I understand how the lever freed the shapes from being tangled in the jungle gym. It looks like it somehow destroyed the jungle gym. Is that really a good solution? Especially considering it's referred to as "her" later in the text as though sentient. I will have to share this with some kids to find out if it's confusing to them.

2. As the Kirkus review points out, the female shapes have a bow and/or eyelashes, which is annoying. When my daughter was a toddler she insisted only girls have eyelashes. I was like, where are you getting this? And then I realized it's from cartoons like this. Male characters are neutral. Female characters have something added (usually eyelashes or a bow) to mark them as different. Sigh.

3. Do you really understand what a tetrahedron is from the illustration in this book? I certainly did not and had to look it up. It's a three-dimensional shape rendered as a small triangle inside a bigger triangle. I don't think it works.

4. My public library copy of the book has the book jacket taped on so I can't see the full endpapers. If an illustration is crucial to your book, please don't put it on the part of the endpapers that are covered by the jacket.

Question and answer format about a random assortment of facts. One wonders if these are things the author's children tended to ask about, or if someone did a survey and found these are common questions. The pages about plants disconnected from what starts out as a book about fauna. If all living things were meant to be addressed, there should be an inclusion of more types of living things, e.g. fungi, bacteria.

This book is about math! I love tying other subjects into reading to get the other subjects meaning, as well as math more meaning.

Synopsis: This story takes the reader through a counting journey as one little Monster’s birthday party gets very crowded. Ages 3-8.

Response: This book is ideal for younger children, or children struggling with skip counting by 5s and 10s. The book’s rhyme and rhythm make it an easy, enjoyable read that could easily become a class favorite.

The little monsters in this book are having a party for their friends so the story starts out with the concept of adding. Then eventually when the monsters start leaving the party, the story moves to the concept of subtraction. This book is great for younger students to review their addition and subtraction skills.

This is a great book for young students that are learning how to add and subtract. The little monster is having a party and all his friends are invited. The story starts out with adding ones 1+1, 2+2,. Then, it goes into the tens. Eventually, all the little monster's guests begin to leave and the story turns to subtraction to show how many monsters are leaving

This was a great little math book. A little monster is having a birthday party that his mom threw for him. As each monster friend arrives, he counts them all. All of a sudden, so many monsters are there that there starts to be chaos. The little monster's mom has had enough of the chaos, and she finally fixes it. This is a good book for kids to learn how to count. The illustrations are crazy and adorable. Also, the rhyming words and phrases are a great way to keep all kid's interest.

This book introduces counting and basic math concepts. We have a little monster that is waiting for his first birthday guest to arrive. One-by-one the guests start to arrive and soon there are 50 guests! The illustrations in this book are fun and the story of the book is funny. It says this book is for k-3rd, but I don't see it going any higher than 1st grade. Overall it is a fun way to introduce counting and kids will have fun with it along the way!

"Monster Math," is a math-related children's book. The math concept the book addresses is counting, addition and subtraction. In addition, the author provides her readers with the opportunity to do math within the book. As I read this book, I was doing the math in my head and making predictions about what number comes next. The book begins with one monster, then two, three and so on until there are a total of ten monsters. Then, the monsters begin appearing ten at a time. When there are ten monsters, ten more appear - which makes twenty monsters. The monsters keep coming, from twenty to thirty, thirty to forty, and forty to fifty. Since fifty monsters is way too many, the mother begins to get rid of them. She shoos away forty of them, leaving ten monsters remaining. Out of the ten monsters left, five more leave. Then, another one departs, leaving only four monsters. One more leaves the house, so now there are three. Finally, two monsters leave the house and the party is done. The author then asks, "How many are left?" I believe that by asking this question in the story it challenges young children to use math in the story in a fun way. By doing this, the reader is staying engaged as well as having fun when doing math. Also, if children are able to figure out how many monsters are left, it shows that they understand the mathematical concept the author is expressing throughout the book. I would strongly recommend this book to teachers who are teaching their students lessons involving counting, addition and subtraction. I would also like to say that out of the six math-related children's books I have read, I believe this book is without a doubt, the best one.

This picture book is about a little monster who has a birthday party. too many monsters show up to the party. The book counts up to fifty monsters. I like that it showed counting by ones and tens. I think the author does a good job at using the book to show kids how to count in a fun, visual way. I would use this as a read aloud in my classroom and would recommend it to other teachers who are teaching their students about the concept of counting.

This is a fun little counting book about a monster who is having a birthday party. The author uses different counting techniques, like skip counting, to count the guests as they arrive at the party. This book had really great colorful pictures with crazy monsters on every page. It is sure to keep kids interested throughout the book and lead into many different discussions about numbers and math
