This book puts Twilight vampires in the light of the Muppets. The book is a What-if-the-Marquis-De-Sade-was-a-vampire type story. And if you know anything about the Marquis; it is that sick, twisted and sexual. Not typically my type of reading, but I was bored and it was free... so....yeah.

Mitchelle's series, inspired by a vampire who has donned the legendary name of Marquis De Sade, continues in this sixth installment. This time the reader is introduced to two young lovers, a mortal woman who is admired and sought after for her beauty, and a young man who was born half mortal and half vampire.

The woman, once a lover of Sade before seeing his true self, has suddenly vanished from the apartment of Justin, the half-breed who destroys vampires. Hearing the Sade is back in Paris, he is convinced the diabolical man has captured his former slave. Enlisting in the help of another vampire to locate Sade - and of course, his beloved Madeline, he has to repay for this information by vowing to also try his best to locate the current vampire serial killing traumatizing the streets.

The books plot is no mystery, as much is given away in the beginning. The reader knows who the killer is, the details of Sade's involvements, and everything along the step of the way. While it's not a mind twister and isn't a read that makes one think, it does offer some amusing tension between the old rivals Marie and Sade.

Justin's character is convincing enough but it wouldn't have hurt to know a bit more about him besides his undying devotion to the memory of Madeleine. Pacing is fast enough and I never grew bored, although the midsection and ending of this novel was hurt by its lack of weight.

Before a Sade novel I read went into much more sexual detail, but here it was sadly amiss. Those looking for more of the same will find it a bit dry here, hinting more rather than showing. The compassion of Lilliana was a change, and welcome, but didn't make the most sense. The interesting 'family' was the more entertaining aspect. I couldn't really care about Madeline or Matthew, as they just didn't seem real and sympathetic enough. The ending was an abrupt drop, almost like the writer realized she'd reached her word limit and had to suddenly cease. A more thorough resolution - on the parts of many players - was sorely amiss.

Besides that, this was a fun little book in other ways, I was treated with a few chuckles, and it's hard to put down. Call it a guilty pleasure. Not something that's first star reading that one should actively seek out, but a book that's good enough not to be ignored if you walk by it in the library somewhere.

A quick, creepy read. By no means perfect but enjoyable enough.

Overall this book is dark and demented. These vampires are not your young adult romantic vampires. These vampires consist of a dominatrix, a baby vampire named Chuckie (shudders), two hideously evil child vampires, wacky mom and dad vampires (who brought their children over to the undead), a psychotic “vampire slayer” wanting to do nothing but die, and of course the perverted Marquis de Sade .

The creep factor hits high in the Hugheses family. Mr. Hughes had an affair with Marie, the dominatrix and Marques de Sade’s mother-in-law, and ended up being turned into a vampire. He then proceeds to turn his wife and two of the older children. His wife couldn’t help herself and turns the baby of the family also. So now you have a family that only ages in mind (which makes Chuckie the baby extremely creepy). Now Marie is coming for visit to her “American family” and she has a hidden agenda that involves payback to Marquis de Sade in the form of a “vampire slayer”. She knows he will follow her to Hugheses because he just can’t resist the temptation.

One paragraph pretty much sums up this book. From page 188:
“Everything seemed to be in upheaval. His sister was preparing to kill his brother. His brother had killed a little girl. Aunt Marie, who was afraid of nothing, was terrorized by the sight of his little sister. Babette was bonkers. His father wanted to kill his brother, and his mother might be in the basement with a naked Uncle Louis.”

This is my first book (that I can remember) that I have read of Mary Ann Mitchell’s and I do think I need to read some others that involve her Marquis de Sade characters just to understand them. Definitely for the horror vampire genre lovers and for adults only.

Oops...read before I knew it was part of a series. Not sure it's going to make that much of a difference as even without knowing I thought it was a pretty good book. Not one of the greatest vampire books out there, but it kept me flipping pages. Not for the weak of heart when it comes to explicit content. As vampire books are becoming so popular with the teen set this might be one for parents to restrict if you do that sort of thing. Which I do...uh hem Megan that means you.
In a nutshell...I'll read the 1st decide if it's worth reading the 3rd.

I actually loved this book. It was a quick read and moved along rather pleasantly. I own it and would suggest it to anyone looking for a book about vampires of a more traditional nature.

A mid-series story. The Marquis de Sade is a vampire and living in San Francisco. He's still a sadist and still enjoys torturing people both physically and mentally. This story focuses on Wil and his father Keith. Both are vampires but Keith is in a wheelchair and enjoys killing. Enough that he's starting to become a little obvious.

I didn't really like any of the characters and didn't really sympathise with any of them. I also had no inclination to read more by this author. The characters really had nothing that made me wonder what happened next. I didn't regret reading it but it really didn't attract me more.

Jonathan is a cannibal. He's never killed anyone and mostly eats flesh he cuts off of his feet. Then his wife discovers his secret and threatens to tell his mother. Jonathan freaks out. Then he meets a guy who is apparently the devil and things start to get weird.

And boring. The book is full of Jonathan doing bad things, then feeling sorry for them. Also lots of scenes of him (and hist mother) trying and failing to stand up to the devil (Yakut aka Tukay). Really, it's not all that great a book.
