Ho ricordi, nemmeno troppo sbiaditi, della grande emozione che mi suscitò la lettura di questo libro; ero ragazzino, quattordici, quindici anni, forse meno; credo di averlo letto tutto, o quasi, in piedi nel garage di Roccaraso. Di anni ne sono passati, parecchi direi, e rileggerlo è stato un grande piacere. I dolori sono diventati vissuto, e non più timori di vivere, e la vita, intanto, ha iniziato a presentare i suoi inesorabili conti. Forse è questa l’unica vera differenza tra la lettura da ragazzi e quella da uomini, il Peter Pan che è in ognuno di noi colpito al cuore dagli anni. La storia è semplice, ma estremamente avvincente: due gruppi di ragazzi, avversari terribili, si dividono due spazi all’interno della città; da una parte i giardini di Via Pal e dall’altro l’orto botanico. Molnar ci schiera tutti dalla parte di quella della Via Pal e del grande eroe del piccolo esercito, il soldato semplice Erno Nemecsek. Sono storie da ragazzi, clan innocenti per giochi semplici, le armi di battaglia sono i sacchetti di sabbia, ma le strategie sono da grandi generali, i problemi tattici fondamentali e le alleanze degne di Machiavelli. E di alto profilo anche i due capitani, da un lato, Janos Bora, dall’altro Feri Ats, per le camicie rosse. Nella storia c’è di tutto, l’alto tradimento, le società segrete, le alleanze, l’onore e le amicizie. Ma oltre ogni cosa c’è lui, Nemecsek, grandissimo eroe che paga con la vita la fedeltà al suo gruppo. Sia ben chiaro, muore per una bronchite, nessun coltello, nessuna banda di giovani criminali, solo due gruppi di ragazzini. Insomma, gli ingredienti sono quelli giusti. Molnar non gigioneggia sulla storia, anzi si denota pure l’assenza di mestiere. Ma il risultato è ottimo. E questo libro diventerà ancora più apprezzabile quando i ragazzini per strada in Europa apparterranno al retaggio del passato, con un presente chiuso tra internet e le playstation.½

Kamaszkori olvasmány - nagyon izgalmasnak találtam, még az sem zavart, hogy fiúkról szól. Irigykedtem a csapatokra, akik barátokká, társakká váltak, a hosszú és bonyolult játékra, stratégiára, amit kitaláltak maguknak. Igyekeztem megfigyelni, hogy hol és miért bukdácsolnak az életben.

Jó volt nagyon izgi volt. Szerintem a legjobb könyv.

I try to be frugal with my 5-star ratings as not to cheapen them; I reserve them for the best of the best, for my favorite books of all time. The Paul Street Boys by Ferenc Molnar was an easy choice in this regard.

I remember reading this book at a friend's house a long time ago, perhaps 5-6 years past. My friend and I both loved the book and I remember crying wholeheartedly at the ending, which was the only part I could fully recall when I set about to rereading this marvelous novel a few days ago. I had been meaning to read it for quite some time, but I could never remember what the title was, and more particularly, the name of the street. By courtesy of my dear friend Uncle Google, as we call him in our family, I discovered the title and immediately downloaded an electronic copy of the book. So, with the backstory cleared up, I should be getting to the review itself.

The Paul Street Boys relates the story of a group of boys trying to protect their little plot of undeveloped land in the midst of Budapest from the redshirts, a group of older boys who want to use the land to play ball. The story can be read as a satire mocking European nationalism, as the boys use many nationalistic and military terms while playing their games, and are so infatuated with their "motherland" (they even call it that), that they are ready to take the direst of measures in order to protect it from their enemies. Well, in the end the boys' motherland betrays them, and it turns out the honorable, idealistic soldiers were just specks of dust in the wind with no real control over the fate of their "country". This realization is made all the more terrinble when keeping in mind the sacrifices made to save the little piece of land (won't spoil anything, but it is really tragic). The book definitely hit me to the core and was potent in its criticism of nationalism.

However that entire aspect of the story, so painfully obvious to me now, was completely lost on me the first time I read it. Reading the story in 5th grade, I only saw a tale of friendship, bravery, loyalty and courage that touched me immensely. And the great thing about this book is that it works so well on both levels. The story itself is so captivating, so wonderfully well-written, with such interesting characters, that it's entirely sarisfactory without the allegorical aspect. The two overlapping levels of meaning, however, make it a joy to read for both children and adults, lend it more complexity, and make for a richer reading experience.

The Boys had a great cast of characters, who were surprisingly complex for a children's book. I loved how Feri Ach and his gang weren't demonized: they were decent enough, just as our boys were far from perfect. I also really love the timelessness of this novel. I believe it was written in 1907 or thereabout, but it's aged extremely well and doesn't feel outdated despite the horse-drawn carriages that ride around Budapest or the old-fashioned ink pots that are always getting spilled in someone's pocket. The language is descriptive without being flowery or redundant; the writer knows which words to use and is able to create atmosphere by saying very little. And the ending is heart-rendingly perfect!

To wrap it all up, I can simply say: "Read this book!" It's a children's classic for a reason (although it's probably more of a YA novel, really). It's not at all dumbed-down like many in the genre, and it can be a true pleasure for any reader. After all, it's universality that makes a classic, and The Paul Street Boys definitely has that.

Un bel racconto, interessante per la descrizione della vita di una certa borghesia all'inizio del '900.

I loved this play. Rodgers and Hammerstein do not to it justice in their adaptaion "Carousel"

I would love to see this play as it appears in Ferenc Molnar writing.

An excellent book for young people

Storia della lotta di due gruppi di ragazzi di Budapest, per la conquista di uno spazio libero per i giochi, tra l'Orto Botanico e la segheria. Due eserciti composti soltanto da tenenti e capitani, tranne l'unico soldato, Ernest, che morira di polmonite per i ripetuti bagni che viene costretto a fare.
Accanto al mitico Ottavo Distretto di Budapest, tra le viuzze strette che lambiscono il vecchio quartiere ebraico, c'e ancora la piccola via Pal: che fu teatro, nella fantasia di Molnar, della piu memorabile battaglia tra ragazzini che la letteratura abbia mai raccontato. I ragazzi di via Pa1 (1907) e infatti la lotta tra due gruppi di ragazzi per il predominio su un terreno libero per i giochi, attorno a una segheria. Due "eserciti" composti soltanto da generali e ufficiali. Un solo soldato semplice: Erno Nemeczek, biondo e mingherlino, di povera famiglia, che morira di polmonite per i bagni nel laghetto dell'Orto Botanico, a cui e stato costretto. Una storia malinconica e poetica, avvincente, che come tutti i grandi libri rimane un classico per i lettori di ogni eta. Una nuova traduzione integrale dall'ungherese e una divertente, e allarmante!, introduzione di uno dei piu corrosivi scrittori satirici italiani.

הספר ילדים הקלסי ההונגרי. עלילותיו של נמצ'ק בחבורת נערים במלחמה על הגרונד ומותו מות גיבורים. בתחילה הקריא לי אבי את הספר בהונגרית. אחר כך קראתי את זה שוב בגרסה העברית "מחניים".

A volte, sotto l'etichetta "letteratura per ragazzi", si relegano libri che in realtà hanno molto da dire anche e soprattutto agli adulti. "I ragazzi della via Pàl" ne è un esempio, perché questo romanzo, edito per la prima volta nel 1907 (ma ambientato nel 1889), intendeva denunciare la mancanza di spazi urbani per la gioventù, costretta a fare delle "guerre" per contendersi un piccolo campetto dove giocare: un tema, in fondo, attualissimo. I protagonisti incarnano tutte le virtù e i vizi che sono presenti tra gli adulti: l'eroismo, il coraggio, la viltà, il tradimento. Ma il libro, nel suo finale amarissimo, è soprattutto una meravigliosa denuncia dell'inutilità di ogni violenza, di ogni conflitto, di ogni guerra e il messaggio (universale) di Molnar è che diventare "uomini" significa, precisamente, comprendere questa inutilità.

Decisamente questo è il libro che più di ogni altro mi ha formato, non foss'altro perchè letto da bambina, quando la nostra mente è una "spugna" che trattiene e conserva i dati appresi. Nel corso della mia vita, quante volte mi sono sentita Boca, quante volte il nemico, il capo delle Giubbe rosse, quanto volte il povero Nemescek unico soldato semplice e solo eroe del romanzo. E quanti crudeli ed insensibili fratelli Patzor ho incontrato! Il senso dell'amicizia, quella che conduce a lottare insieme, l'amore per la natura e per la giustizia, la voglia di contrapporre sempre e comunque al Potere che costruisce palazzi distruggendo spazi vitali e di gioco un progetto di vita diverso e più "umano" e rispettoso di ciò che la natura ci regala: tutto questo ed altro rappresenta per me I ragazzi della via Pal. Il finale amaro e i fiumi di lacrime versati per una battaglia apparentemente inutile non fanno venir meno la volontà di continuare a lottare e di non piegarsi. Restando ragazzi tutta la vita.

A beautiful book about friendship.

That's a very good book not only for children. In that book you can read about a lot of children, whose want a place for playing, they called it "grund". Read it, you will enjoy that.
