If you like numbers and want to get into the technicalities of the various ratios that can define a boat’s performance, this is a good place to start. It covers matters like maximum hull speed and stability curves before moving on to measurements such as the sail area / displacement ratio. This is all relatively clearly explained.

Note, though, that although this book was re-issued in 2006, it has not been revised since 1994. This means 13 years’ worth of development in boat design have not been taken into account and may explain some of the author’s odder pronouncements, such as writing off the concept of a cruiser/racer, or stating that a cruising yacht should have a long keel.
