LitRPG is a square on the 2019 r/fantasy book bingo and I’d been dreading it. In the end I decided to read one of the original entrants in the genre. And, like, it’s not bad? Clearly translated from Russian, but well executed. Nothing really complicated going on here but it’s as enjoyable (and derivative) as a lot of Kitchen sink Urban Fantasy.
I completely understand why some people really hate this book. Before reading I saw that most people (who hated the book) stopped around 30%. When I got to that part, I completely understood. The main character is extremely annoying and had been for many subsequent pages.
However, I noticed those who made it past that section of the book loved it. I soldiered through it and am glad I did. The main character is still annoying, but the story picks up and gets interesting.
The dialogue is very simple (likely because this wasn't written originally in English), but the overall story is pretty good. I'll likely continue in the series but after a break...… (mehr)
