Clinton R. Nixon

Adventures in a weird and horrific American West with steampunk devices, magic, and fantasy races. (Elves stand in for Native Americans.) Much easier to build characters and play than Deadlands; the system uses a single d20 (adding skill ratings and attributes) for resolutions of tests and combats. If you want a campaign set in a Weird West without a lot of rules and background history, this would be a good game.

The setting that comes with the game isn't too special, but the system - and particularly the key system - is pure genius.

This is an excellent game mechanic, and Nixon has written a wonderfully atmospheric game world that leaves plenty of space for the GM and players to add their own elements.
