The Care of Troublesome People von Wayne E. Oates
With gentle humor and unfailing insight Wayne Oates brings us to a more empathic understanding of backbiters, authoritarians, self-servers, clinging vines, and star performers who create stress and conflict in the church.
I read this years ago, and I loved it. On re-reading it later in life, I am finding some of the author's "recovery" from his childhood of poverty and affliction to be a little too thorough and too instantaneous. Perhaps that life has taught me that such problems early in life can haunt us into adulthood, regardless of the help we find along the journey.
i love wayne e. oates. if it were not against the laws of nature i would make him my wife (paraphrased simpson's quote). this book is one of the many reasons why i love oates so much. every pastor should read this book. in a world full of "preachers" that go from church to church whenever they run out of sermons this book is about being a "pastor." oates not only helps you to understand why you should be concerned about shepherding people but helps you to develop the skills necessary to shepherd when you yourself are merely a sheep in need of shepherding.… (mehr)
