Book Name: No One Knew: My Emotional Journey of Being Married to a Sociopath and How I Learned to Heal
Author: Renee Oliver
Format: eBook

My Thoughts:
This is one of the hardest books I read in 2020. This year 2020 is painful in many ways. I wanted to read non-fiction books to hard-hit the reality we are already facing, and collaborating with the Book Taster team is one of the good things I did in life. I picked up this book, and when I started reading it, I was all shaken. I have never been subjected to domestic abuse but have been reading and hearing so much here in India. It is also to be accepted that certain communities where this abuse is more prevalent, according to my understanding. But, the recent census during the lockdown period n and around the world shocked me. The statistics on women abuse have shot up like lightning.

Domestic abuse is a gendered crime which is deeply rooted in the societal inequality between men and women. It is a form of gender-based violence, violence “directed against a woman because she is a woman or that affects disproportionately.” (CEDAW, 1992).

I don’t know why this law is not followed strictly? Are women that easy to be abused? Are not women brave enough to fight? While reading this book by Renee Oliver, I understood that women seek love and compassion. Their never-ending forgiving attitude sometimes backfires. Alas, women become victims of abuse that which they must have never anticipated. Abusers are very intelligent and manipulative. They know when and how to control a woman’s mind. This is what the character of Joe showcases.

My Review:
This book, by Renee Olivier her memoir. This book unleashes the emotional turmoil she underwent that her partner, a sociopath imposed on her. The sociopath, Joe entered into Renee’s life when she had been single for thirteen years. He charmed her with his tactics, and poor Renee believed him. The man was so manipulative that Renee underestimated his convincing skills and literally believed him for no reason. In her wildest dream, she never attempted to suspect him until and unless his reality came out when she moved to his house with her children.

Every chapter, when finished, I could sense my blood boiling and cry for Renee. I was lurking silently in my mind and talking to Renee to see the reality. This is how her writing impacted me.

I recommend this book, and this is definitely an eye-opener to all those who give a blind eye to the abuse they are facing.

My Rating: 5/5
