The story moved too fast to be able to set up the impactful moments properly. I didn't really feel anything for the characters by the end.

This omnibus was THICK. I'd never heard of Invincible before watching the show (which I'm a little bit ashamed of because I've read most of TWD comics and know Kirkman is really solid), but after watching it I immediately wanted to pick up the comics and find out what happens next. I can't wait to keep reading. I love how complex the characters are, and how there are some twists that I just never saw coming.

Junk gets serious, and a vicious fight ends in death. I love when superheroes/superpowers meet morals & ethics. It’s always fun. Of course, now Mark has two women in love with him to deal with as well. What’s a guy to do? *eye roll* Also, I feel really bad for the mom. She’s been long-suffering for a while now. Her husband wasn’t who she thought he was and he almost killed their son. He leaves and doesn’t care about her anymore (so he says). She feels lonely and turns to drinking. She decides to get her life back together and pursue a career. Her son pops up with his step-brother, from the man who left her, and kind of hints for her to take care of him. She gets attached to said baby and then a villain bent on revenge, beats the snot outta her. I want to see some happy moments for her.

This is such a great comic series. It was interesting to see more parts that were included in the show since the ending to the show and the ending to volume 3 matched up, I thought the rest would be stuff not in the show.

This series has such great humor, but also deals with grief and heavy topics so well and recognizes they are things that can happen at the same time in someone’s life.

This story is so good! I got interested in reading the comics after my husband and I binged the show on Amazon Prime. And as you can probably tell from this fact, we loved the show!

It was honestly so cool to see how well the show had been adapted from the comics. At the same time though, enough was different that I really enjoyed getting all the extra bits of the story in the comic. This ultimate collection volume contains the first 3 volumes (13 issues) out of the 25 total volumes (144 issues) of the comic run. It seemed like most of the first season of the show was covered in this first ultimate collection volume. I’m excited to have so much more ahead of me in the story!

Invincible is the story of teen Mark Grayson as he finally begins to inherit his super powers from his dad— who just so happens to be the most powerful superhero on the planet. “Family Matters” is an insightful title for the first issue, as we see Mark go from average teen with lots of homework, a part time job at Burger Mart, and hanging out with friends to learning what it means to be a super hero. We also get to see the dynamic between him, his super powered dad, and his mom who doesn’t have super powers aside from those types hardworking moms normally do.

I don’t want to give too much away, so I will just say that the story has lots of VERY interesting twists and character development. There were parts that made laugh out loud, parts that made me say “that’s so cool,” and parts that just left me too stunned for words.

TW: Graphic violence (in both the featured volume of comic and the show— the later of which is rated TV-MA)

Invincible Ultimate Collection Vol. 1:

It's a "What If?" scenario for The Walking Dead wherein creator Robert Kirkman conjectures about how things would unravel if aliens had triggered the zombie apocalypse as part of their invasion plans. Various cast members of the series are resurrected and given super powers to fight back in over-the-top, super-gory fashion.

It wants to be dumb fun, but leans too heavily into the dumb.

This is maybe the best superhero anything I've read in a long time. I'm probably super late into reading this comic, but figured I'd join the fun. And I will repeat fun. As of the first volume, there are a lot of things I liked about Invincible and just a few things I didn't like. I basically stopped reading DC and Marvel books (for several reasons), so I wanted to find superhero book I could enjoy. Looking at previews and reading some brief character bios, I was sold. Overall I enjoyed this.

The comic is about a teenage boy named Mark Grayson who starts off knowing he already has super powers because his dad is a Superman-like hero too. He lives in a world much like DC and Marvel where superheros are familiar to people. His mother is a human and knows everything and seems to be okay with it all too. Everything seems like it's a normal superhero book until the second issue.

The comic book itself reminds me of all the stuff I created as a kid. When you are young and draw superheroes that are obvious homages to the ones you watched on the TV. Nearly everyone is a homage to something from classic DC and Marvel comics. However, unlike their other company counter parts, I'm already starting to like the characters a lot better. Kirkman knows how to make them human more then gods.

I never got into the Walking Dead comics or television shows. I'm sure the writing might be great and it's popular, but zombies aren't my thing. Yet I love this comic books writing. Well this isn't a zombie comic either, not even close. The best part of the writing is the fact there are so many characters to like and best part is the characters develop. They even seem to age. Kirkman knows how to make god like heroes human. They have real feeling and emotions, especially the main characters. I'm also impressed Kirkman can keep track of all this stuff, he must have a ton of notes.

I like the art too. The art in this first volume is okay compared to later on, but I already saw I like it. I like the character outfits and the colors he uses. The artist is switched I think with this one or the next one. It's not noticeable though until the second volume. I like Invincible's outfit the most and reason I got the comic too was his looks.

The only thing I didn't like was it got semi confusing with the crossovers. I know very little about Savage Dragon and nothing about the other characters. Thankfully this book doesn't make me want to read the other stuff. Maybe I will someday, but sticking with Invincible for now.

I really can wait to read the others. I bought them all, so I'm going to be busy for the next few weeks. Some people binge watch TV shows, but I'm gonna binge read this comic book. These even feels like it should be a TV show, but kind of glad it's not one yet. I feel like a TV show whould take away the greatness of this book.

Now I'm hooked on this series. This is clearly turning into my favorite superhero book. Starting to get attached to character I didn't think I would care about and reading story's other superhero books don't really focus on anymore like alcoholism and even simple things like homework.

I think my favorite part of this book is yes it a superhero book, but it's also a book about the everyday life of the superhero. Kirkman nails both in one issue usually. Oddly I'm interested in Mark Grayson's personal everyday life as much as I like the superhero scenes. This book will deliver drama, comedy, and action all at once.

Another thing I love is the fact that Invincible is around my age (maybe few months older). Noticed he's my height and around my build too. It's refreshing to find a hero I can relate too. I know these are older comics now, but reading him in high school and college made me flashback to my days in both...not to long ago though.

As I said before, I'm glad I got the other hardcover Ultimate collections because I'm hooked on these.

Angstrom, Nolan, Mark. Great storylines in this volume. The teenage love triangle drama was pretty lame, but I realize those weren't written for me.

4/5 I really liked it

Continues to using super hero comic book generalizations, cliches, and tropes; runs with them and at the same time, poke fun at it; while also having fresh and original twists.

There were a few storylines here that are in season 1 of the animated show. Really nice to see what they took, changed, and kept from the comics.

Overall, this volume was mainly about Mark and his mother dealing with the aftermath of his dad leaving, and his new life as a superhero for the government.

I enjoyed the mini side stores/adventures Mark goes on during his superhero duty and the drops/hints of new, interesting storylines laced throughout this volume.

3.5/5 stars

When I think of an overall line for Vol. 3, I think "did this just get good?" not that it was bad, it just got even better on a whole new level.

Volume 3 is basically the end of season 1 of the animated show. I think the show did a great job of moving print to screen... the violence and the emotion that was in the fight between Mark and his dad was done very well on the screen. The comic did a good job too but it pales when compared to the animation. It was just done so well.

Think, Mark! Think!!!

Amber gets the most dialogue she's ever gotten here in the whole series. They make it seem like she is only back with Mark because he is a superhero now. Really don't like her character...

The Angstrom story looks like it is building up to something good.

4/5 stars

Sometimes even fun only because of the main series and its characters, this fan-fiction level writing leads to an amateur story that goes nowhere and seems to struggle to explain its own existence, which is never a good sign.

This was the last issue I had to read for our book club. Will I read any more volumes? Probably not. It was a fun read. This is the issue where it took a violent turn for Omniman and his son. It answered all my questions I had when I watched the show and now I understand. I'm glad I read the first three and looking forward to discussing it with my group. Great illustrations and awesome story.

I'm enjoying the series so far. This time around factors more around the father than the son. Why did he do what he did?? I need answers? Such a sad volume. All the characters are great... even the villains!

I like this series, and I dig the ink pen art style. I love superheroes/people with powers in general, and this does it in a fun, clever way though a lot of the female characters are pretty bland. This comic is older, so there are a few things that make me roll my eyes. The humor’s usually lighthearted, but the action can get vicious and gritty when it wants too. Either way, I’m excited to see how the story progresses.

What a bloodbath! The story has taken an interesting turn. The anti-superman indeed... wow, seeing the dad beat his son to a pulp, and the way it wrecks the mom is just... whoo
