In Transcending Mysteries: Who Is God, and What Does He Want from Us?, Ginny Owens & Andrew Greer, both singer-songwriters share their discoveries made in Old Testament stories, and applications in their personal lives and the lives of friends. Often Christian churches focus their preaching on Jesus Christ and the New Testament, the authors chose to let God speak through the Old Testament, connecting their reading to Jesus Christ's life and teaching.
In eight chapters, The Voice, an accessible Thomas Nelson Bible translation is used. Where the text don't speak for themselves, the authors render from books and commentaries, ranging from C.S. Lewis, Philip Yancey to Tim Keller, John Ortberg and Andrew Murray to shed a light on the lives of Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Isaiah, Joshua or Hezekiah. God's faithful, loving, provisioning, healing, and caring for His people. When we as humans struggle, doubt, fear or feel too young, God is there.
The Transcending Mysteries series is indeed best described as Bible study meets coffee house meets dear diary. Who Is God, and What Does He Want from Us? deals with the authors' calling, music ministry, physical barriers, and so read partly as biographies. Bible study is another characterization, including questions for discussion ending each chapter. Personal and at times uncomfortable or provoking. "I felt like my back was up against the wall. Too much too fast. My emotions couldn't keep up and I needed a break. Nature has always facilitated a vital environment me to hash it out with God. A hike is a sanctuary where God's presence is no longer a cliché but reality."
The authors alternate their points of view in the chapters. Each relates to one of their songs, lyrics included. Though no one has all the answers to life's questions, I highly recommend Transcending Mysteries if you want to learn from to artists' experiences, the Bible and learn to say Amen to God's Word. God is love. Just ask the Old Testament.
