37 months - Picked this up in the gift shop at Mount Rushmore as O spotted it and wanted me to read it to her right there on the spot. All the copies were sealed so we took a chance and bought a copy without seeing inside, this is something I NEVER do. Turned out to be a nice choice. Great illustrations an simple explanations. We will revisit this book to remember our trip often I'm sure.

"Cows, Cats, and Kids" shows what life is like for the family of a rural veterinarian. This book does a great job of showing how the vet's children are actively involved in helping their father with his work; his children are an invaluable asset to his work as they work side by side with him. "Cows, Cats, and Kids" is also valuable in that is shows a different side to veterinary practice than working in a well-equipped clinic. Vets in rural areas are mobile and do not always have the medical equipment available to them that they need for a given situation, so it is important for them to know somewhat rugged and cavalier methods to treat animals. The photos in this book illustrate very well the types of animals and situations vets in a rural area may have to deal with. Working with livestock is a completely different beast than working with cats and dogs, which this book does a good job of showing.

I don't know if I would use this book specifically in my classroom, as it is for a younger audience, but I appreciate that is shows a different aspect of the veterinary field that students who live in the city may not be aware of.

While biographies of presidents are fairly common, biographies of first ladies are harder to come by. They can, however be just as valuable in learning about American history, or if young girls are searching for possible role models through books. Dolley Madison is one first lady who has gotten more coverage, and this book could be used in an English or History lesson in which one of the many letters she wrote is also read.

Not an easy book to find these days, but if you can get it (try the library?), this is a great behind-the-scenes look at a national icon and the people behind it. Fun details and images make Rushmore even more "3-D" than it is in person.

I was surprised by how fascinating this book made Mount Rushmore. Forget long passages of text -- this has lots of bite-size pieces. Fun facts and quirky stories will keep young readers engaged, so they don't even realize they're learning.

This story was about a boy who talked about what he would do if he had different things. At the end of the story the boy said he would hug his mom all day long since he didn't have the different things. This story teaches children to always hope for something because one day you might actually get one of the things you hoped for.
