Escape from a Nazi Death Camp 🎥 von Hereward Pelling
From PBS - The Nazi death camp at Sobibor was created solely for the mass extermination of Jews. But on October 14, 1943 the inmates fought back, in the biggest and most successful prison outbreak of the Second World War. Of the 600 inmates present on the day of the escape, 300 escaped. Around 50 survived the war and of that 50, only a handful are still alive. This is their last chance to reveal the true story of their escape. (fonte: Imdb)
This PBS documentary of the Sobibor mass escape on October 14, 1943 is told by 4 of the survivors: Toivi Blatt, Phillip Bialowitz, Selma Engel-Wijnberg, and the Russian POW Semjon Rozenfeld. There are reenactments of life in the Sobibor death camp which show the courage of these inmates under inhuman circumstances.
There were 600 imprisoned in the Sobibor death camp, but only 300 attempted the escape into the forest while being shot at, murdered or captured, but many escaped and at least 50 were alive at the end of the war. Only a few of the survivors are alive today, most in their 80's or 90's. Their testimony to this event is important for us to remember and pass on. No one must ever forget that these camps were all over Europe and most of the people who knew of them kept quiet.
