4017. Augustus Caesar Dodge, by Louis Pelzer (read 27 Apr 2005) This 1908 book is on the life of the first U.S. Senator from Iowa, who was the first U.S. Senator born west of the Mississippi River. Though Iowa was admitted to the Union in 1846 not till Dec. 7, 1848, did it elect a Senator. I enjoyed this book and learned things I had not known, such as the border dispute between Iowa and Missouri, finally settled in Iowa's favor by the U.S. Supreme Court in Missouri v. Iowa, 7 How. 660 (1849). I found this book of great interest, though I admit the years before the Civil War are a favorite historical interest of mine.… (mehr)
