It was a cute story based on telling the truth and how it can cost you your friends. This would be placed in a K-2 class, i would think about having it in my library.

The book Gases Matter describes what matter and gasses are and how they are used. Oxygen is a gas. People, plants and animals need oxygen to live. There is a short story in the book called Under the Sea. This helps the reader understand how science helps a boy overcome fear. I give this book four out of five stars because Anna Prokos does a good job of providing students with vocabulary of matter, gasses, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen. There is a short story that connects well with the vocabulary. I would use this book for a writing lesson on introducing how to write a informative essay. I could also use this book as an anticipatory set before an experiment on helium.

Killer wallpaper? This book gives all the details on poisoning. Did you know that there is a theory that Napolean died from the wallpaper in his bathroom? Apparently there was arsenic in the green dye in the wallpaper design. Did his love for hot, steamy baths make it the perfect breading ground for toxic mold to form? This is one theory that is believed by some. This book highlights a couple of poisoning stories as well as discussing toxins and their role in damaging the body. This book would be a welcome addition to any upper-level elementary or middle school classroom. It is a nice forensic book that would appeal to many readers.

When Jackson and Wyatt see a shooting star while laying in the backyard, they both make a wish and suddenly, they are in a spaceship with Max, the dog, flying around the solar system. This is a very simple story with some basic facts about each of the planets and a memory trick to remember the names in order. There are various fun facts posted in the story about the planets to accompany the text of the boys' trip. There are several facts, resources and a glossary listed at the back. A good introduction for young readers who want to know more about the solar system. A good book for a primary/early junior classroom library.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is great in that it helps children to learn the order of the planets as they tour the solar system! Explore with Jackson and Wyatt while learning facts about our solar system. View bright, colorful illustrations of the planets and sun as well. Highly recommend for elementary readers.

Enjoyable story of two boys camping in the back yard who dream of a journey through space. Not sure why the author chooses to call their ship a space shuttle--it is much more than that. There are a good number of facts here, but this is feared toward very early readers, maybe first or second grade. After that, intelligent kids will want to know a lot more information than this book provides.½

This is a realistic fiction book because it talks about how a group of friends decides to go to the park but realizes the importance of making up rules before they go so no one gets hurt. This also a realistic fiction book because it describes a relatable and believable setting but involving false characters or animals. I could use this book to talk about the importance of what rules are. Another way I could use this book is to talk about how finding a group of friends who make good decisions is important when growing up in life. The media in this book is watercolor and mixed media.

This is book describes how Neat Nick is struggling to clean up the streets of his town and wants help from Sloppy Joe. Although because sloppy joe is lazy, Neat Nick is hoping that he learns to change his ways. This is a realistic fiction because although this isn't based off a true story this could definitely be something that could happen in real life as many people are constantly trying to keep the planet clean. A way I could use this book in class is to discuss the importance of recycling. Another way I could use this book is to talk about the difference between being sloppy and neat. The media in this book is mixed media and acrylic.

Helping Hands, is a book about how different sea creatures end up needing someones help. When Ocho the Octopus seeing anyone struggling, he has no problem going to help them. Ocho does so much for his sea friends but eventually gets tired from doing so much work. His sea friends come together to create a bed for him so he can take a nap and rest. This book is fantasy because it's showing how sea animals are helping each other out by doing things like showing a fish how to get to his school. It's also a fantasy book because it's demonstrating how fish can talk which is not possible.

Genre: Fantasy

Use:
1. Reading this book to show different sea creatures.
2. I could use this book to talk about what it means to help others and being selfless.

Summary: This is a biography about Clara Barton who was a teacher, nurse, and founder of the American Red Cross. The beginning of the book talks about her childhood. Clara was the youngest of five children and she learned a lot from her older siblings who were protective over her. She was a very smart little girl and enjoyed going to school and learning new things. At age seventeen she became a teacher and several years later she opened her own school in New Jersey. When she became tired of teaching she started working in a patent office in Washington D.C. Abraham Lincoln helped her to keep her job there when women were not receiving fair treatment. Clara then started going from battlefield to battlefield helping wounded soldiers. She took them food, clothing, and other supplies as well as treated their injuries. The soldiers began calling her the Angel of the Battlefield. Clara first started working for the International Red Cross while she was in Switzerland and decided the organization needed to come to America. She finally founded the American Red Cross in May 1881.

Review: I thought that this book was well written and engaging. It provided a lot of interesting information about Clara Barton and her work. I like that the author included information about her years spent as a teacher and not only her work as a nurse. The information was presented in a way that was interesting and easy to understand. This book would be useful for someone who was doing research on Clara Barton. There were a lot of pictures and photographs that supported the information in the book which provided another resource for readers.

Grammar is a less than exciting subject, and grammar books are typically dry and uninteresting. However, Grammar All-Stars: Slap Shot is a different kind of grammar book. The book's focus, synonyms and antonyms, are woven effectively into a story line of a hockey game. The prose is worded like a play-by-play broadcast with the synonyms and antonyms sprinkled throughout. It is easy to imagine that children will enjoy reading this story aloud like real sports announcers. And while the sports hook will help readers over the grammar hump, the book's layout, organization and style make it an effective learning tool.
The book contains three chapters outlined in the table of contents. Each chapter is entitled with a hockey term, such as face-off challenge, up and down the ice, and last shot for first place. Additionally, each chapter has a subtitle that relates the grammar topic: what are synonyms, what are antonyms, and using synonyms and antonyms. There is a box at the bottom of the page directing attention to boldface words.
Unlike many other grammar books, Slap Shot starts right into the story with out an explaination of the grammar-specific term. However, throughout the page there are bolded words- these are the synonyms. They stand out on the page, clearly distinguishable from the rest of the type. Even a semi-observant reader can begin to make connections. It is not until the reader is well into the chapter that a box, clearly segregated and labled, states the grammar term and defines it. There is also a suggestion to go back and count how many pairs of synonyms can be found. This format is repeated. Finally, in chapter three, a box containing and defining 'thesaurus' is introduced. The information is concise and helpful. Following the three chapters is a more formalized list of terms, definitions and explainations. On the following page is an activity in which the reader circles synonyms and generates a list of antonyms.
Stylistically, the book is simply fun. The hockey theme is present throughout. 'Chapter' is written on a penant background. The chapter's numbers, written in a font similar to a number on a jersey, is placed inside a hockey puck. The boxes with information look like scoreboards. The grammar rules on the last page are bulleted with more hockey pucks. The review, entitled 'All-Star Challenge' has answers printed on the next page that ranks you, based on your score, with more hockey terms: offsides, penalty, assist, and GOAL!
Slap Shot is exciting, interesting, and well-organized. Beneath the list of author and illustrators is "Language arts curriculum consultant: Debora Voege M.A." noting a concerted effort to obtain accuracy. I think the combination of formalized language arts and narrative makes this book one of the best non-text grammar books I have ever come across. I would love to have the entire series as a part of my class library.½

“Rock and Minerals”, a great identification book for young and curious readers, that is actually a part of the series “Our Planet Earth” made by Discovery Channel Earth. It is definitely a fun book, full of vibrant and engaging illustrations, some of which include pictures of rocks, charts of rock formations, caricatures of people flooding California during Gold Rush, map of minerals that can be found in different parts of the world, etc. The book brings to life the wonders of nature, as the young readers learn about the historical facts, discoveries and ideas. The young scientists will also learn that every rock tells a story, that every rock is practically a piece of history, because it gives scientists clues as to where it formed, what it’s made of and where it’s been. Every page uncovers some fascinating facts about formation of rocks and minerals. At the end of each chapter there is an “Activity” part that works as an extension to spark more curiosity in young scientists. For example, at the bottom of the chapter “Rock Around the World” (that includes the map of the rocks and minerals in different parts of the world), the activity offers the young scientists to head for a local library and investigate if their local area has any minerals or gemstones. It also challenges them to think of the types of products that can be made with these minerals.
I really liked the book for its simple approach and colorful illustrations. I would definitely recommend it to the students, ages 9 & up.

This biography is about Clara Barton, her life and the many ways she was viewed as a hero by many. This book gives information from her childhood and the many volunteer and job positions that she had throughout her life.

I found Clara Barton to be a true pioneer for women. She was so dedicated and determined to her calling and did not take "no" for an answer easily. I had no idea that she was the founder of the American Red Cross. Her feats were tremendous not only for women but for those who were in need.

I would really like to have children create a timeline with the specific events that Clara Barton did during her lifetime. I think this would help them develop an appreciation for exactly what she was able to accomplish throughout her lifetime. I would also have them research the American Red Cross and find out more information about what it is they do and who and how they help those individuals
