Many of us have a book or two from their early childhood that we seek out as adults with memories based on half-remembered (and frequently misremembered) details. This picture book was one of mine, and I just found it! The only particulars I had to work off of were 1) an illustration of an ice-skating boy positioned with his skates perpendicular to one another (incidentally, this gave me the conviction that this is how one skated), and 2) the last page depicted a garden archway covered in flowers.

As for the book itself, it's a joyful look at all the fun things there are to do as the seasons change (assuming you live in a clime with changing seasons). The illustrations are cute, and I'm delighted to have successfully hunted it down, despite it being out of print and not having aged well with respect to diverse representation.

A great example of dedication to a dream and perseverance. Try, try, again, design and redesign. A good choice for the aspiring inventor in your life.

At first I did not like this book, it seemed like it looked down on poor people. But I think it’s just matter of fact. I don’t generally see representation of families who live this way, with yards that are not sterile and empty.

It addresses how people do treat people on “the wrong sides of the tracks”. It also addresses eminent domain. The erasure of the working poor and pushing aside of them is not something I’ve commonly found either. I would pair this with The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton.

(Growth area: Nonfiction/informational) This book tells the true story of the first flight across the English Channel. It was interesting to learn about Louis Bleriot. He was a competitor of the Wright brothers. He flew the English Channel in an aircraft that he designed and built. This was a great historical picture book that told a story that many might not know about.

I love the Provensons' cheery art style, and this book was one of my favorites as a child. It's a great start to talking about the seasons with kindergartners or other young kids. Just watch out for the kid in summer who looks like he's gotten conked on the head with an apple...

This book details Louis Blériot's journey of creating his own airplane. The story is humorous and contains beautiful illustrations depicting his aviation progress. I like this book because it gives children insight to a lesser known aviation pioneer. This would be a great book to use for a biography day.

I like the fact the story is told through the eyes of his son. That brought an unexpected interest to the narrative. The illustrative and the text fit well, ,somehow harking back to the early 1900s. It still doesn't quite capture my interest, but I see its appeal.

This is a very simple book with minimal descriptions of the seasons and what may one do during that season. Not a book for upper elementary.

This collection of traditional nursery rhymes includes classics such as "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" and "Three Little Kittens." Each poem has its own illustration even when there is more than one poem per page.

Which is a very fancy way of saying "Pop-up Book".

Chalk it up to a pop-up deprived childhood if you'd like but I'm a grown woman who loves pop up books. I've also had life long fascination with Da Vinci because he was a genius artistically and scientifically, putting him in a class of his own.

So, a Da Vinci pop-up book? Yes, please! I heard about this one years ago and have been on the lookout for it ever since. I lucked out and it arrived earlier this week and I can't stop looking at it.

I finally actually read all 12 pages today; the writing is skewed towards 10 year olds, if I had to guess, but who cares? It's beautiful! It pops up!

This is a lovely little story about a man you yearned to fly. Through trial and error, he built model after model until he finally flew. After bumps and bruises he managed to fly from France to England in 37 minutes! I think this book was really well written, and I would love to add this to my personal library. The illustrations were amazing! I loved that the artist used watercolors and one point perspectives. I would definitely recommend this to teachers!½

This book is written like a story. It is very historical. It is about Louis Bleriot - the first man to fly across the English Channel. This book would be fun to use as an introduction to engineering topics

This book is about Louis Bleriot. Louis Bleriot is a famous aviator, engineer, and inventor. He is known for making the first flight across the English Channel in a heavy aircraft. This book is great to use for science because it talks about design and construction, and incorporates history. It is also written in the form of a story to make it more engaging to readers.

Summary:
This book tells of the failure leading up to the success of the first flight across the channel. Louis Blériot decides that he wants to fly across the channel but each airplane he gets he winds up crashing it and hurting himself. He doesn't give up and finnaly he is able to make it across and crash land again.
Personal reaction:
This book is good to show children that you can not give up but instead continue trying untill you suceed. Blériot did not make it across his first time and in fact wound up injuring himself many times before finally succeeding.
Classroom extension:
1. Have children create their own airplane to fly across the channel, a distance between two marks in the classroom.
2. Have children write about a time they did not give up.

The muted colors make this look like dead history, detracting from the drama of the story. The family gets names, but not even the hero himself has a personality. There is no guide to pronunciation, which I, for one, desperately need. There is no context, no note comparing it to the Wright brothers' accomplishment.

I do like the style, the rhythm, of the language... it reads almost like poetry, imo. But I am not finding a way to appreciate this enough to give it an award or even to recommend it.

Delightful. ?Not shy of being honest about the facts of life and the fact that some animals aren't sweet and 'friendly.' ?áFor all ages, from little ones who like to look at the pictures even when there's nobody to read the words, to parents, to parents of 'animal companions,' to seniors who might revel in prompted nostalgia.

(Thirteen yo little dog) Dinah is crazy about Stones.... Dina doesn't like anyone to see where she puts the stones. ?áPerhaps she is building something. ?áShe is doing her work. ?áMuffin (big shaggy puppy) doesn't do any work. ?áShe picks up big sticks, hoping to tempt someone to play with her. ?áDogs like to play."

"The animals that were... (images from earlier pages)
the animals that are... (more images from earlier pages)
and the animals that will be... (images of puppies, goslings, etc.)
bring joy, laughter, and life to the lives of the people who live in a house that needs painting, at the end of a road full of holes.... Maple Hill Farm."

Now I really want to read the book that I actually meant to order, A Year at Maple Hill Farm.

"½
