At the beginning of this book it's explained that Sara has had a troubled childhood, and was sexually abused by her uncle. But that is about all we get of her backstory. And it doesn't really explain why she marries Roy, except she feels that he provides her with stability
David's parents Roy and Sara tolerate each other. Roy kind of forces Sara into being exactly what he thinks she should be, a perfect little housewife. And she doesn't fight back. Until she finally has enough and wants to escape.
Sara has weird control issues and paranoia over David's instalove summer fling turned love of his life girlfriend, Mary. At the beginning of the book she barely tolerates David, much less talks to him. But once he starts dating Mary she turns strange, thinking that Mary will only lead him down the wrong path, and take him away from her, that she has to be the only one there for her son and make sure he does the right thing.
At one point, I thought that Sara might be having an affair. Nope.
But apparently she somehow orchestrated the murder of her husband and kidnapping of her son's friends via burner phone. Because that was believable. There were only one or two scenes of explanation for this. I think this was done to try and make things more mysterious, but all it did was leave huge gaps in the story and put holes in it.
David is nice enough, but his instalove with Mary was a bit much. The writing and their conversations made it too simple, and syrupy.
Overall, I'm glad this was a freebie and I didn't actually spend money on it.
Definitely do not recommend.
