Emma Raveling

Prendete una ragazza con un comportamento da maschiaccio, una profezia misteriosa, un'Ombra decisa a conquistare il potere e tre bellimbusti che lotteranno per il cuore della giovane e... otterrete Whirl.
Partiamo dagli aspetti positivi: l'unione realistica tra fantasy e realtà, la creazione di creature legate all'elemento dell'acqua di cui esistono varie razze. Ci si mette un po' ad inquadrarle tutte, ma la spiegazione è molto chiara (presente anche un glossario a fine libro).
Ho apprezzato anche l'inizio intrigante e il fatto che il passato di Kendra, la protagonista, e della sua famiglia venga svelato un po' alla volta.
Parlando proprio di lei devo dire che la simpatia nei suoi confronti è stata piuttosto altalenante, perché spesso ho trovato irritante la sua sfrontatezza e a tratti mi è parsa un'approfittatrice. Bisogna però ricordare che è stata cresciuta in quel modo, e che comunque alla fine della storia matura un po'.
Un personaggio che invece mi ha fatto sorridere fin dall'inizio è Nexa, che per il suo comportamento mi ricorda molto Haymitch.
Un condensato d'azione e romanticismo uniti al dolore e alla paura dell'oscurità che sembra albergare dentro di sé.
Le uniche due "critiche" che mi sento di fare è che molti personaggi vengono presentati tutti in una volta e quindi inizialmente si crea un po' di confusione e che, dopo il buon inizio, c'è una parte piuttosto "piatta" prima che cominci il vero rush finale con i colpi di scena.
Tutto sommato però non mi è dispiaciuto, e sono curiosa di sapere come evolverà ulteriormente il personaggio di Kendra.… (mehr)

Once again I was swept away with the world Raveling has built for her characters. Kendra has grown up some since the last book and then again displays the trauma she has faced in some not so healthy ways. Along the ride are what remains of her core group of elemental friends. The sexy and roguish Julian is back to stir up trouble and of course, we can't forget the perfect and almost godlike Tristan waiting in the background. So many events take place in this novel that I was not expecting, some truly heart wrenching moments. Clearly the reader is going to be growing up alongside the Sondaleur. And if the excitement and action have amped up to such a level in only two books, I can only imagine what the next installment will bring us. Meantime I'll tide over with Raveling's novella and vignette series. Finally we'll get some insight into Kendra's mysterious love interests. Stay tuned. Breathless! That's how this book made me feel half of the time! Here is the kind of novel that sucks you in and leaves you desperate for more. I loved Rawling's world of Ondine's, being a huge fan of mermaids and the Colin Farrell movie Ondine lol.
What I found was a refreshing twist on the siren tale.
The main characters are three dimensional and suprsing. The main love story is one of the best I've read recently, right next to Wanderlove for me.
What took Whirl to the next level for me was that it turned from your average YA romance and quickly took a dive into a much deeper self discovery tale.
