As I began reading this historical work centered on events in the Bible, I quickly found myself caught up in the characters. Hannah, a midwife, desires a husband and children but believes she passed her opportunity for that. Hurt in the past, she works as a midwife. Ze-ev, a soldier, lost his first love to another, so he throws himself into caring for his troops and preparing for battle.

When these two meet, sparks fly initially because of dislike for one another but then change to something more. I appreciate how this book combines actual characters from the Bible such as Moses and the daughters of Zelophehad while including a story of finding love while overcoming hurts from the past.

So if you enjoy reading Biblically-based works which include fictional characters, check out this book for yourself

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Hannah knew at a young age that her life would be devoted to caring for women and their babies and this had always been enough for her until she meets a man named Ze-ev Ben Judah. As they become better acquainted, she slowly begins to yearn for more. What would it be like to be a wife, to share the love and companionship of a husband, and to even know the joy of having her own child? Is she too old to know this fulfillment?

The Midwife's Heart is set during the time of Moses, the plagues, and the search for the Promised Land. Hannah's skills in midwifery allows her to treat injured and dying men and it's during one of these times that she meets Ze-ev. He is impressed with her abilities but past experiences have prevented him from wanting marriage until ...a woman with long, wavy locks and amber eyes covered by thick, sooty lashes stirs feelings that he'd thought were long gone!

I enjoyed watching these two strong characters as their relationship progressed from respect to friendship to something deeper. Author Brenda Ray has written an enjoyable story filled with faith, forgiveness, and hope. If you enjoy romantic biblical fiction, you will want to read The Midwife's Heart.

I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

I enjoyed reading about Hannah and her ability as a midwife. She seemed to always be busy and I loved how much care she gave the mothers and their newborns. Although the book does highlight her as a midwife I found myself more captivated by her wanting a family.

She thinks she has grown too old to marry much less have a child. She also is wary because she was deeply hurt and betrayed by a man once before. Ze-ev is a powerful man who other women in the camp notice. His presence makes Hannah nervous yet she liked to be around him. It was interesting to read how the women were treated in camp. They had very strict rules and if they disobeyed the consequences were unpleasant. It would be difficult to live during this time period as there was danger all around.

I enjoyed the talks that Hannah and Ze-ev shared. They talked about the promised land and dreamed of raising a family. I wonder when one of them will share their feelings with the other? When the plague comes and takes the lives of those at camp and surrounding area, chaos breaks out. Hannah feels helpless as men lay dying. The story is filled with jealousy, deceit, promises, and love. I enjoyed getting to learn more about Hannah. The story was one that reminds us to forgive and that “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
