The 5th edition of the game that changed role-playing. Ars Magica pioneered 'troupe-style' play, where players would be alternate being the main character (a wizard), then a supporting character (Companion), and then one of the guys with a sword (Grogs). Set in Mythic Europe, with the first system of magic (as opposed to a collection of spells) that allowed players to design their own spells. Still a very good game.½

I never thought I'd be impressed with a game where you play vampires until I saw this. And, while admittedly the prospect of playing blood-sucking fiends still hasn't completely won me over, I definitely like this book.

For one thing much of the art has that sketchy, black and white, thick lined quality that I so enjoy.

Also, the modern setting game "Vampire: the Masquerade" portrays vampires as slick and decadant or punkish and countercultural, which somehow doesn't appeal to me. By contrast the "Dark Ages" places these monsters more interestingly in a world that is already harsh and brutal, and in which their beastial appetites seem less out of place.
