Trigger warnings: Death by assisted suicide, death of a father, grief and loss depiction

8/10, this was a new arrival at one of the two libraries I go to at the time I read this and wow, this was an amazing new rom-com like The Sun is Also a Star and A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow but it also had some really heart-wrenching moments of grief which reminded me of The Thing About Jellyfish and the road trip aspect was cool as well, it's similar to Changing Gear in a way. The two main characters were very enjoyable to read but I liked Jack more since he had a relatable struggle of losing his father.

The two characters met each other unexpectedly in a taxi but they got along well which I really liked, they once had a romantic interest then they broke up but they are still friends with each other. The ending was bittersweet since Jack finally met his long lost brother Alex but they are still grieving and Jack thinks of Hallie who had her cancer temporarily treated but it might come back and another character named Owen who died by assisted suicide. If you like a sad yet heartwarming rom-com this is the book for you.

This book is a fun read. Hank is my kind of teenage boy - a veneer of confidence while underneath he is a seething mass of insecurities, second-guessing himself and doubt about the future. His is a genuine, ordinary teenage voice in an ordinary hometown setting, but this book is anything but ordinary. Highly recommended.

“Some times the best plan is no plan”. A rule that Hallie and Jack learn after spending 24 hours together. This was a very sweet book, with great life lessons. It’s ok not to have a plan, not to know what road to travel. This books discusses teen cancer, teen anxiety, drug abuse, family tough love, all wrapped up in a story that is similar to the one that Jack is writing: Choose your own ending. This is definitely not a rom-com book, but rather a rom-com-drama. Jack is dealing with the anxiety of losing his father, his brother to drugs and having a mother who is too wrapped up in her own world to realize the pain that Jack is in. Hallie is struggling with a rare form of cancer, trying to find her way in the world & not wanting to be a burden on her family. Jack & Hallie’s “meet-cute” is not your normal get together. It’s one that builds over time, which is what they both realize they have a lot of and can choose the path of the unknown.… (mehr)

This started off really strongly and then kind of went downhill from there. Hank was funny and charming and I kept waiting for this moment where I'd learn more about all the characters and finally connect with them but it just never happened. It felt like they all had problems and they explained their problems but you never really got to see how those problems affected them if that makes sense.
