Imbued with a deep-rooted appreciation for the Pacific Northwest’s resplendent beauty, my childhood fascination for Oregon’s landscape drew me towards John Riha’s Incident 395. The novel’s vivid depiction of nature’s power and the tenacity of those daring to confront it resonates deeply. Incident 395 is more than a disaster narrative; it submerges readers into the high-risk lives of individuals wrestling with an environmental calamity—a wildfire ripping through southern Oregon. A rich ensemble of characters, from the firefighters on the front line to a father and his blind daughter lost in the wilderness, enhance the plot with their personal narratives, giving deeper significance to the overall catastrophe.

Riha masterfully takes readers on a gripping, educational odyssey. The narrative cleverly imparts intriguing insights about the forest’s biome, wildfire behavior, and the impact of weather on firefighting efforts, striking a balanced mix of technical knowledge and storytelling. The book confronts the harsh truths of wildfires, underpinning each character’s increased peril and making their experiences profoundly resonant. A comprehensive glossary and well-integrated explanations ensure an uninterrupted reading experience, enhancing the readers’ understanding without sacrificing the narrative flow.

Incident 395 artfully intertwines an exhilarating adventure, personal struggles, and the grim realities of a life-threatening disaster. Its well-paced, character-driven narrative effortlessly engrosses the reader while also revealing the profound bravery of those battling wildfires. Furthermore, Riha deftly threads the narrative with political undertones surrounding such events, enriching the story. Incident 395, with its authentic, raw depiction of disaster management, stands as an insightful homage to the courageous souls safeguarding our lives, making it an unmissable read for anyone seeking a thrilling, enlightening experience.
