An informative book that helps children raise conscience about homeless people, explaining what it is like to live in their situation and why they are there, teaching them to help those who need it most in different ways and to be grateful to those who help and are empathic.

A broad overview of types of natural and human-made disasters and tragedies, and usefully explains the difference between those humans can cause and those they can't, while emphasizing that most disasters are outside of our control. Photos of actual disasters (while child-appropriate and not very graphic, they show the serious consequences of disasters) are combined with much more gentle, reassuring drawings of inquisitive kids. Surely this book would be a great resource for parents and teachers alike in talking about disasters and how to be resilient during and after them.½

I should not be surprised that this book is well done. The entire series has been. This one looks at the environment in a way that a child can understand, and that can create discussions between children and adults. It does not talk down to kids, which I really like. I do wish they would have shown real pictures of the people or the inventions that were mentioned in the pages.½

This series of books is a must have for libraries and class rooms. Each takes a look at a social issue and breaks it down in ways that are easy to understand. This book looks at bodies. Not the scientific way of looking at bodies, but a psychological way. It takes questions kids ask like “what are their different change areas for boys and girl” and answers it in an emotionally intelligent way that kids can understand. As the book goes along it also defines concepts like boundaries, body safety, and even consent. All in a way that can be understood by a 4 or 5 year old, with out talking down to them. Excellent resource!

The majority of this book is a good look at accepting people for who they are without judging based on how they look or what their home is like. I would not include the information at the end because I believe "sexual orientation" is a topic for individual families to discuss as they see fit. Recommended for a class of students who may not have much exposure to people of different races or cultures.

This book helps children through separation and then divorce by posing questions and answering them. For example, Why does divorce happen? The book also discusses how family time will change after a divorce. At the end of the book, it reassures readers that everything will be okay even though there are a lot of changes going on in their family.

This book is an appropriate way to explain to young children where babies come from, which is a difficult question for many parents to answer, Especially with young children. I do think it will spark some questions with older preschoolers and kindergartners, but younger toddlers are not capable of that kind of thought process yet.

On the Internet - Jillian Roberts - 5
In today's world every student should have this book as required reading. The author puts things simply, so it’s easy to understand. It pulls no punches and is honest when it says that sometimes bad things exist and we can do little about it, but it is the way in which it is written that works so well. Mixing illustrations as well as real pictures helps make the information seem real and not just another weird warning for adults. I am very serious when I say, not just one-to-one school but all schools should make this required reading before they give their students a device, I mean it. Parents, beat them to it, and get a copy to keep at home for your kids, and the neighbors.

I have been very impressed with this series as a whole, and this new title is perfect for the world we live in. It's about prejudice that can be seen at school, at the playground, at home. The author does a great job describing what is prejudice and other hot words that are thrown around. She makes them easy to understand, and easy to talk about. I also really like that she says it's something passed down, sometime unintentionally. This is a perfect book for any library, and it is sorely needed in our communities today.

Using different family make ups including same sex, interracial and different cultures this book gives a very succinct but clear description of the reasons that couples may separate or divorce. It addresses issues such as children feeling as if it may be their faults, the changes that happen like living in a new home and reminding children that no matter what change happens what there are people that love them. I appreciate the diversity, clarity and hope that this book brings despite the challenges that comes with separation and divorce.

I love this book, but I hate that this book is needed. We live in a 24/7 news cycle world. Explaining that to kids can be hard, but Dr. Roberts is here to help. This book uses both illustrations and real pictures to point out what is being explained. In this instance, its about tragedies and disasters seen on the news. The author takes time to discuss the difference between the two, why they happen, and how people are affected. This series has been a great source of information for parents and kids, to help them understand everyday life.

This is a book about death and dying. The book explains death and that all living things stop living at some point. The author describes funerals, different beliefs about death and what happens to people after they die. It ends by giving ideas on how to support grieving and validates the variety of feelings people experiences when someone they love dies.

This book shows a way for children to understand death or at least gives some understand or explanation of death to a child who is experiencing grief or loss for the first time. Death is explained in an age-appropriate way that is soothing and has extra open end questions at the end to help cover the concept of death.
