This book answers the question as to whether a working analyst should be writing a biography. Not really. Rodman has the estate's permission but lacks any ability in balancing the three aspects of Winnicott to be covered: personal life, professional life and his theories. All are sacrificed. Letters are excerpted but lead nowhere , a lot of time is spent on his opposition to Klein but the story is so badly handled I was left with no sense of what he (Rodman) was trying to get across. Worse, Winnicott is most famous for his Good enough mother theory and for the idea of the True and False Self. I read the book because of my fascination with the latter but , although it receives a chapter title, it is covered for less than two pages and is so confusing that I will have to look elsewhere.
