This book explores the psychological distress, primarily depression and anxiety, that people experience. The authors sought to locate the social causes of these distresses in order to help better understand, diagnose, and treat these psychological issues. Through extensive research Mirowsky and Ross look at how socioeconomic status, marriage, children, gender, life events, and age affect an individual’s mental state. Once these aspects are thoroughly researched the authors are able to explain the patterns noticed and conclude which social causes are the most impactful.

This book is an excellent examination of psychological distress and how to rework the diagnosing of depression and anxiety. Exploring the social causes of distress is a great way to understand mental issues. While this is a great investigative tool the book is heavy in research and data which can make it difficult to read at times.… (mehr)
