Kurzbiographie
Philippine de Rothschild, born in Paris, was a member of the famous French banking family as the only daughter of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and his first wife Elisabeth Pelletier de Chambure. During World War II, when she was 10 years old, she witnessed her mother being arrested by the Gestapo; Elisabeth was deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she was killed. In 1958, Philippine graduated from the Conservatoire National d'Art Dramatique in Paris, and had leading roles with the Comédie Française under the stage name Philippine Pascal. She entered her father's wine business in the late 1970s and at his death in 1988, became the Baroness Rothschild and owner of three great estates in Bordeaux, including Château Mouton Rothschild. She was the first woman in five generations of her family to lead the family wine-growing enterprise. She continued the tradition, begun by her father, of commissioning prominent artists to design the Château Mouton label every year, and helped modernize and diversify the business. She married twice and had three children.

Rezensionen

This book was published to coincide with the European opening of the exhibition, Mouton Rothschild: Painting for the Labels 1945-1981 at the Royal Scottish Academy, as part of of the 1983 Edinburgh Festival. The labels bear witness to the marriage of wine and creativity celebrated in works of art from the wall paintings of Pompeii to Picasso's Bacchanales.
