Chapter 1 : Relinquish the False-Self

“I have but one passion – it is He, it is He alone. The world is the field and the field is the world, and henceforth that country shall be my home where I can be most used in winning souls for Christ.”
Count Zinzendorf

If passion can be interpreted as a very strong desire, perhaps in the history of Christianity, this character is one of those figures who have an extraordinary passion. His name is David Livingstone. Born during the industrial revolution in England, David Livingstone worked at a cotton mill for twelve hours a day for only five Shilling per week. The Livingstone family is not a family that puts education first. David Livingstone had to save little by little before finally continuing his studies at Anderson's College in Glasgow in 1836 and deepening his knowledge in the fields of medicine and evangelism.

Long story short, at one point, David Livingstone was traveling on a mission to Lepelole. As one of the evangelistic media, David Livingstone learns the local language. However, the security situation was less than supportive in this area, David realized that every time he finished preaching, many of his people were murdered, arrested, or driven out by other tribes.

As a way out, finally, in 1844, David decided to head north, towards Mabotsa. It was in this place that an event took place that changed David's life. He was attacked by a lion that crushed his left shoulder. The result was fatal because, for the rest of his life, David could barely use his left hand any longer.

To this extent, the mission trip undertaken by David Livingstone, it seems that it will not be enough to be summarized in just an article. Several different sufferings could not diminish the passion he had for preaching the message of Christ. He was driven solely by compassion and mercy.

Compassion and mercy for souls who do not know, Christ becomes fuel for him to keep going for the glory of His name. Furthermore, passion describes the strong desire that God instills in our lives. That desire forms the basis of everything we determine in our future lives. Moreover, it shapes our vision and outlook in life and for those around us.

From the life of this servant of God, we can learn that the passion in the life of David Livingstone is the love of Christ for others, and this has stood the test of time. So, what is our passion right now? Is it for temporal earthly things or heavenly? What the Bible says about passion for temporal things is that lust includes adultery which leads to sin (2 Peter 2:14). Likewise, the various sins of worldly lust include fornication, uncleanness, greed, which are the same as idolatry (Colossians 3:5; Galatians 5:19).

And so, we have to relinquish our false-self to dispense with passion for temporary things. This is very important to do, because it causes us to fall into sin, leads to corruption, takes us away from the holiness that God desires, leads to condemnation, regret, and ignorance. Furthermore, it is also the first step that must be taken to enjoy heavenly intimacy in our daily life.
