This series continues to be really GOOD! It's just so good!! And creepy.. Things get creepy in this one.

Now I don't ready any other DC titles so I'd got no idea what was going on with the whole Joker "dinner party" thing with the rest of the Bat Family.. That was lost on me, but it was creepy... and apparently the Joker's face got peeled off at some point and stapled back on? Gross.

It's James Gordon Jr that's the real villain here. He's got a lot of issues... and some plans for his sister.. Whenever he appears in a panel I always get shivers.

2015: Part of my massive Barbara Gordon Re-read which I had a glorious amazing time with. Birds of Prey, under the hands of Gail Simone, was a gorgeous thing and It made me super happy to have all my amazing women back together doing amazing things!

2013: Even a few weeks late I can remember how refreshing it was diving back into this universe after taking 2 weeks to read the newest volume of Captain Marvel. I had some issue there, that opening this up reminded me every page that there are people out there doing it right. Able to blend the real life and the super life, like a hand in a glove. Able to blend horror and snark, with love and affection. Who have men, women, and trans people. Father, Mothers, Daughter, Brothers. All together all at once, and it's still a kick ass Girl Power Title.

Yes. Yes. More of this. So much more of this I need and want and love all of it.

it was setting up to be an interesting story when Gail Simone got yanked as the writer, and the following writers brought it down terribly, then she returned on the last issue of this volume and rescued it but it's a terrible shame. Could've been a great, strong volume like the previous 2 but definitely got bogged down by the change of writer.

You think Batman's life is dark? He just has to deal with the memories of his family. Batgirl on the other hand, she has her family to deal with.

So the insertion of the Death of the Family story line felt weird and awkward.

Gail Simone. If I could get my hands on all her Trade Paperback collections I think that I would read them all in one sitting. Each time that I read something new by her it amazes me even more. And, this was awesome. It was partially part of the Death of the Family storyline with uber creepy Joker stuff, very, very wicked uber creepy. But, there were also stories before and after the romp with Joker too, and, in a whole lot of ways they were even creepier.

The TPB starts with deliberate fires that seem to be being started by homeless people, but, then that storyline sorta gets left for awhile because then the readers get thrown into the Court of Owls stuff a bit. Batgirl sorta works with Catwoman as she tries to save (although it doesn't exactly work out as either Catwoman or Batgirl see it going) a former Talon (is there such a thing as a former Talon?) The female Talon who nearly took out Batgirl when the Court was attacking all the Bat allies. Next, when it seems as if maybe Batgirl will get a breather, she finds out that someone (one guess who. He has a problem keeping his face on straight...) has kidnapped her mother. Then we get thrown into the broader Batfamily Death of the Family drama. And, I do really think that Simone did a great job keeping Batgirl on track through the whole thing, while not letting the bigger storyline get lost either.

But, it was the stories that the TPB ended with, concerning a new villian called Firebug, as well as the stuff with James Gordon Jr. that was truly disturbing to me. Amazingly disturbing. Yikes.

I have to say that I really liked the almost end of the TPB when Alysia and Barbara got to talk. I can't wait for more Alysia, she sorta has come out of nowhere and I really have gotten to like her character. More Alysia!!

But, then there was the very end. Phew, that was, ouch that was painful to read. I know that because of that ending there are so many different places that the story can go, but still. Ouch. Now I just want to give Batgirl a big hug.

I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf of DC Entertainment.
