Two brother pigs down by the beach. One is in a terribly foul mood. How to get him out of it?

A story of imagination ensues upon discovery of a pirate hat.

I wanted to enjoy the story. But I didn't. In my opinion, it left a lot to be desired. Doesn't super work for my pirate storytime either.

Another Valentine's book that was just okay.

I have not read any of the other Chick 'n' Pug books. And I am on the fence if I want to or not. They are quite humorous. (The plot in this one being that Daisy....a girl pug....comes on the scene and falls in love with Pug. Only he isn't super interested. So Chick tries to fix that.). By the end, you can imagine how everything fares.

Pug did not come across as likable, which is a huge issue I have in reading this book. I tried it in two different storytimes and the humor was lost on the children. What they did, enjoy, however, was the illustrations. That is what would incline me to pick up another Chick 'n' Pug book.

I actually read this one a while back, when we first got it at the library. But after reading it again, it's safe to say Jennifer Sattler has quite the knack for children's books (which is probably why she rights them, right?). Sorta reminds of a little sibling looking up to an older one, thinking that there was nothing s/he couldn't accomplish...you know, if there was an effort of actually waking up. Great books for the kids, even better read for the adults. Wait. Mark that. Switch it.

Cute book about a flamingo that wanted to experiment eating different things to turn different colors. There's a fairly subtle set of interpretations that could be read into the book about experimentation, fitting in, "no place like home", etc. Or just enjoy it for the wacky illustrations.½

Jennifer Sattler reminds readers of the wonderful outcomes that may occur when we let go and embrace imperfection.

A story about a flamingo, named Sylvie, who wanted to be unique and colorful like the world around her. Her mother told her that they were pink because of the pink shrimp they ate. This gave Sylvie the impression that she would turn the color of whatever she ate, and it worked! However, she started to feel sick so she decided to go back to eating shrimp. This is a great story to pass the message to kids to be themselves.

Sylvie is a funny book about a flamingo who discovers that she is the color pink because of the pink shrimp she eats. This gives Sylvie the idea to start eating things in all different colors and patterns. After consuming way too many items and turning every color imaginable, Sylvie doesn't feel so well. She then decides that pink is the best shade on her after all.

This would be a great read to encourage individuality, staying true to yourself, and also embracing one another's differences.

This would be the perfect book to read to Kindergartners or first graders at the beginning of the school year.

My colleague, who does most of our toddler and younger storytimes, has really loved several of Jennifer Sattler's picture books. She's going to be thrilled when I reveal my new discovery to her - board books! How did I not know she had made board books?

This latest title features a group of delightfully silly birds, some counting, and a lot of mess.

The story begins with a wordless, rainy day spread. The long-legged, yellow-spotted blue bird of the cover peers into the picture. Turn the page and enthusiastic splashing in the puddles makes "1 dirty birdie." One by one the birds join the count: painting, exploring, digging, and snacking. Then the five dirty birdies get a bath, dry off... and one birdie catches sight of a butterfly fluttering across a puddle. Dirty birdies are back! The final spread includes searching and counting questions like "How many spots are on the first dirty birdie?"

Sattler's cheerful pictures are detailed enough to make looking for colors, spots, and textures interesting but not so detailed that they confuse toddlers. The book is a sturdy rectangle, about 6x4 inches.

Verdict: A delightful choice for a toddler storytime, if your group is small enough to enjoy it. Otherwise recommend it to all your parents and caregivers who have their own "dirty birdies" at home!

I have mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed reading it and found it very entertaining, however, I think the plot of the book could have been developed further. The cartoon style of the illustrations are very cute and pleasing-- with animals given large eyes and expressive faces, appealing to both children and adults. On the other hand, the plot of the book was anti-climactic in my opinion, as I was left waiting for something more to happen. The adventures of the Chick and Pug seemed to be leading up to something bigger than just scaring a cat. The weak plot also made for a vague "big idea," from what I read, I can conclude that the author wants readers to step out of their comfort zones and explore their dreams and desires.

Chick wants adventure, so he looks up to Pug as his hero that can provide that. All Pug wants to do is sleep. Once Chick can get Pug to stay awake for just a while, their adventure begins...at least in Chick's mind. Great illustrations with hilarious expressions and details.

Summary: This is a book about a flamingo that wonders why she is pink. Her mother explains that it is because of the shrimp they eat. Slyvie wonders if she will turn other colors depending on what she eats. She travels through the beach and turns various colors and patterns, just to find out that she liked being pink best.
Critique: I think this book was really cute and had great illustrations. It was fun to read aloud to the class because of the amount of participation they had given me.
Prompts: What do you think Sylvie is going to do after her mother tells her the reason she is so pink?
Craft Elements: This would be a good book to read when introducing skills on self love.

There are two reasons I like this book. The first reason is the characters were well-developed. Chick was tired of being a chicken. He had read a "The Adventures of Wonder Pug," numerous times and dreamed of being a Pug. When Chick meets a real-life Pug, he is in awe. The Pug ends up being nothing like Wonder Pug, relaxing all day, but Chick still finds everything the Pug does to be amazing. For instance, the Pug was sleeping and Chick insisted that "he must be saving his energy for his next adventure." This is a simple, yet classic character development. Chick is proven to be optimistic and enthusiastic, while the Pug is proven to be lazy and boring. Despite the Pug being different than expected, Chick still stays true to his spunky self. The second reason I like this book is the simple language. The plot of the story is very simple, and the language fits this perfectly. For instance, each page has no more than three short sentences. Chick also makes casual remarks, such as, "'Go get 'em, Tiger!...'" The lack of complex language does not take away from the book, but simply fits the story. The big idea of the story is that you create your own destiny; looking up to someone is okay, but in the end, being yourself is the best option.

I did not enjoy this story at all, I guess I really did not get the point of it. I can't think of any curricular connections to use it for.

A very enjoyable read, my kids check this book out quite a bit! This could be used in the library to discuss fears both real and imagined. The kids could then write a short paragraph about their fears and how they might deal with them.
