JOSEPH SCHUPACK (1922–1989)

Joseph Schupack was born to a Jewish family in the town of Radzyń Podlaski, Poland. In the early part of World War II, as the Soviets and Nazi Germany found over Poland, Schupack, then aged 17, and his family endured endless privations. He was deported to the Nazi camps of Treblinka, Majdanek, Auschwitz, Dora/Nordhausen, and Bergen-Belsen. His parents, siblings, and friends were all murdered in the Holocaust; he was the sole survivor. In 1981, he published his memoirs in German, Tote Jahre: Eine jüdische Leidensgeschichte. The English language version, The Dead Years: Holocaust Memoirs, appeared in 2017.
