I've been reading this story by story over the last several months and it is a really good compendium of Greek myths. Of course, the telling of these stories varies widely as they were carried orally for so long, but this book is a good overview of a variety of the Greek legends/stories in a very readable form. For a more academic or historical look, there are perhaps better choices, but overall this is readable and shares the basics.

In Greek Legends and Stories there are many tales that will tell and inform you of the gods of Olympus, the almighty titans, and their awesome status. There is enough information about Greek Legends and Stories to make any fan of mythology happy. This book includes over one-hundred pages of knowledge, ranging from stories like “The beginning of the Earth” to the “Chapel of Ayios Hilarios.”

Within Greek legends, a deal of a book, there is no stone left unturned. For the most part, you can be informed all about the Olympian god’s fights against their many foes, including the titans. Even if you don’t want to learn about the gods or the titans there are plenty of other stories telling of monsters, heroes, and treacherous villains. Some other third-rate titles include tales about general Greek myths, knowledge, and stories like, “Wild Man and the Prince.”

If you look a bit further into the depths, ------ (I have experienced first hand) you will find far more to this book than you would even bargain for. You will find characters that are far greater than you can imagine, with such powerful characters as Zeus and Heracles (Hercules) and shady characters such as Hades, ruler of the underworld. There is always a character that the reader can build a relationship with or be invested in. Sometimes you will come across serious characters and sometimes you’ll come across characters with a bit more banter to them.

In conclusion, I find this book to be very enjoyable and a good read. This book discusses not just one, but several generations of Greek tales, making it very fascinating. This book is full of information that can not only help in doing things such as reports, but also give you a taste of something new; somewhat of a cultural experience. I like this book not just because Greek mythology usually contains violence or destruction, but also, because it is something new and fresh. Greek Legends and Stories, by M.V. Seton- Williams, is a book that allows you to read into new territories, that many people may not have explored before, but if given the chance, should learn them by reading this book. I would suggest this book to people who are interested in compilations or want a collection of them in just one book. If you are into book compilations such as Grimm’s Tales or a darker tone of book, this is the pickup for you.

Inleiding van ca 50 blz over historiek van het gebied. Gevolgd door 170 groot formaat-illustraties. Goed overzicht, maar soms te specialistisch. Interessant is wel de uitgebreide uitleg bij de prenten.
