I've never owned a hemi, but I learned a lot from this book. Now I feel confident that if I had to tear down a hemi, I have the finest guide book made. And I can't say enough for the great photos.

I've found just about all of these Workbench How-To books by CarTech well written and edited. This one, featuring the Hemi from 2003 to present, is no exception. It includes many step-by-step instructions on the various dissembly and reassembly of a hemi with detailed photos and many tricks detailing points to improve your results. There's a lot in here to consume and it would be worthwhile reading this book when considering a rebuild - even if you aren't doing to work yourself (and why wouldn't you?). I particularly liked the explanations around the various design features so you can understand what's going on mechanically. This book is a bit more than a "book for dummies" and would make a worthy addition to any workbench library.

Of particular interest were the chapters on parts selection and machining - they take much of the guesswork out of answering a few questions around those two topics. I don't know how many times I've second-guessed myself during a build and "hoped for the best" - as many of you know, hope isn't worth much when you're torquing on a freshly built engine. I think this book is a good mix of the basics with enough photos and references around what makes the Hemi different to make it worthwhile.

This book was provided as a LibraryThing Earlier Reviewers giveaway.

The book “New Hemi Engines 2003-Present: How to Rebuild” by Larry Shepard is a must have for all who want to rebuild this powerful new model Hemi engine. This book provides step by step instruction plus pictures of every step including the necessary tools needed to complete the job.

Larry starts out talking about the new Gen III Hemi engine and then asks the magic question. Is it time to rebuild this engine? If you answer yes, he takes you from disassembly, to inspection and to the step by step rebuilding process.

Again, this is a must-have book for rebuilding these Gen III Hemi engines.

Another exceptional book from SA! Clear, easy explanations and instructions coupled with photos makes this a resource one doesn't want to pass up if rebuilding a Hemi engine or if just interested in learning more about them. I received a copy as a win from LibraryThing from the publishers in exchange for a fair book review. My thoughts and feelings in this review are my own

Well written book on the new 3rd gen hemis. Many, many pictures. Good descriptions. Many step by step instructions. Warnings about critical steps. Things that are different between the various displacements. One minor complaint, some of the pictures would be helped by an arrow pointing to what is being written about. Sometimes it took me a while figure out what was being referred to. In fairness, I didn't have an actual engine in front of me, which might make things clearer.

Quite a good treatment of the Gen III Hemi engine series. The book covers the topic thoroughly and effectively in spite of covering a relatively wide range of specific pieces of hardware relative to displacements, congigurations, etc. Chapter 1 helps to hone in on the various engines covered before Chapter 2 helps the reader to determine whether a rebuild is required including diagnostic techniques like compression and leak down testing; necessary tools are highlighted as well. Shepard then dives into disassembly and the balance of the requisite steps in a rebuild before wrapping up with a brief summary of installing the unit back in the vehicle.
A nice feature is the "Performance Tip" or "Tech Tip" sidebars that address useful topics that aren't buried in the text.
Overall, a nice effort.

This is another well produced CarTech publication. A must have for any Hemi enthusiast. If you have any desire to rebuild a Hemi engine of 2003 or later you must read this book. If dedicated thsi will be a huge aid in your work and will spend a lot of time on your workbench. All of us that have worked on engine rebuilds understand the amount of work and dedication involved. What this book added to my knowledge is the special unique tools needed for these modern blocks. Tools that are not all ready in my arsenal. Though I possess the necessary advanced electronic knowledge to accomplish the tune up I would only consider this rebuild if I could ent or borrow the necessary equipment. But if you own or have access to these special tools this is a five star must have book.½

This is a must have read for anyone considering a rebuild of a 2003 or later Hemi engine. These are complex, sophisticated power plants not easily worked on with hand tools and elbow grease. For those possessing the advanced electronics required to tune these engines, and who possess the myriad of special tools required to penetrate into the guts of the engine this manual will be of considerable value.

A history of the generation 3 Hemi starts the reader off on solid footing. Subsequent chapters cover such topics as engine disassembly, parts selection, induction upgrades and changes, and final assembly. There is a great deal of photographic illustrations to help clarify material presented in the text. There are a number of sidebars which expand on the information presented in the text. Details are important; the author provides a 20 step regime just to explain piton and rod assemblies. In the discussion of rods and rod bearings the reader will learn the rods have either pressed pins or floating pins and that this distinction is crucial to who does the removal of the piston and its pin from the rod. There are a good number of safety and performance tips offered, stuff only experience teaches. It is the strength of this manual, that is, it is experienced based. Highly recommended.

This 'How to Rebuild' book from Workbench and CarTalk offers complete start to finish instructions in 10 chapters. Lots of photos of engines, parts, and tools; as well as diagrams and charts. I like that some specific chapters are laid out with numbered step by step instructions. Throughout the book, special tips and instructions are highlighted in orange and yellow boxes. You still need to have the knowledge and know what you're doing, but this book lays out the exact order, what to expect, and keeps you on the right track. There's not a single car photo in this book, so don't buy it on that account. But if you have some engine work to do, this is the guide you want.

New Hemi Engines 2003 to Present: How to Build Max Performance by Larry Shepard....a great magazine style book. I shouldn't say magazine exactly. Same format...same size...but with great quality. It's exactly what the title says it is and with the CarTech name behind this book you are assured you are getting a great read. Browsed through it...shared it with family...went right into my CarTech collection of books (all great quality informative reads). I expect nothing less from CarTech.

The men in my husband's family are race car fanatics. A great weekend is one spent hanging out in someone's garage working on a vehicle or two. I seek out these books for that reason alone. And as I mentioned....they don't disappoint. When my husband reaches for this book...and it takes a few hours to put it down...then I know I'm going to give another great review. This time I passed this book over to a neighbor...they were quite intrigued by all the info and motivated to start working on their own projects. Always great graphics, great pics, chock-full of information. The author of this book, Larry Shepard is a "a distinguished engineer, parts manager, and racing coordinator, has a deep history within Chrysler Corporation and Mopar Racing". He's authored many other books and has a reputation for writing some great high performance rebuild manuals. In other words, he knows his stuff.

A great quality read, a wonderful guide, informative...highly recommend.

Thanks as always to the great people of LibraryThing and to the amazing people at CarTech for my free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review to which I gladly and voluntarily gave.

A few clarifications might be in order up front. First, this is not a book about the famous hemi of the 1960s. That engine, though it shares some characteristics with this power plant, was of a different time and different technology. That was the hemi spelled with a small "h". This book is about the engine with the brand name Hemi, spelled with a capital "H". Secondly, the equipment needed to tune and level of mechanical sophistication of these newer engines will make such work prohibitively expensive for the average garage or shade tree based hobbyist. But what this book, and other similar books addressing the building of modern engines, can do is increase the level of the reader's knowledge about the engine as well as provide a kind of blue print to follow when one is planning an engine upgrade or complete rebuild.
Like all the fine CarTech books this is laid out in an orderly format starting with a general introduction to the subject and then chapter by chapter breaking down the engine and the work into systems staring, in this case, with the engine blocks and proceeding through eleven more chapters ending with the exhaust system. The last and thirteenth chapter deals with the all important engine break-in routine.
The book is heavily illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and tables which add a great deal to the text. There are sidebars, highlighted in yellow, which provide additional detail to the subject under discussion. I found the chapter on camshaft selection particularly well written and dense with helpful, if not crucial, information.
Clearly, the author knows his subject intimately and shares it with palpable enthusiasm. As I said at the beginning much of the information in this book provides an opportunity for the owner of a Hemi-powered car to more fully understand the engine in his vehicle and what further potential exists for that engine. Understanding how that further potential may be realized provides a map to planning and executing a rebuild. Whether the owner does his own work being lucky enough to have the myriad of equipment needed to do that work or whether he has it done professionally this book will be of great benefit.

A very good informative book on the Hemi engine from the beginning to present day. If you like the Hemi engine and like to piddle with them this is the book you need. Tells how to make even the ones of today faster and how to improve them. A keeper for your shelf for sure.

If you aren't familiar with this publisher, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Every book in their line follows a similar pattern: detailed instructions + numerous color photos and illustrations. This book is no exception. There are typically 3-4 color photos on each page, showing in detail the steps required. There are also a lot of charts that show specifications/timing/tolerances.

Thick pages, heavy duty cover. Nicely done, as usual. Another top-quality product.

Advance Review Copy courtesy of the publisher.

Another well produced automotive book published by CarTech. Larry Sehpard has written a performance book on the new Hemi engine. The author covers all aspects of the new engine from an introductory history up to and including supercharging. Each page is has relevant photographs. The photos are clear and in color. The book is less then two hundred pages yet covers all the basics. If you have an interest in getting high performance out of your 2003 or newer Hemi engine this would be a good book to start with.

Yet another useful how-to from CarTech: "New Hemi Engines 2003 to Present: How to build Max Performance" as presented by Larry Shepard.

In about 140 pages, Shepard covers basically everything you need to know about enhancing Hemi engines, which he points out is still currently developing and changing fast. Shepard provides detailed descriptions, instructions, specs, and tips on everything from cylinder blocks to computer electronics.

The format of the book is very easy to follow, and it definitely feels like a how-to presented by a professional to the everyday man. The pictures included on every page are great quality. The only con I would like to point out is some of the illustrations do not feel very "polished" and if they were more professionally drawn, I think it would really enhance the quality of this how-to guide. This is a secondary factor, however, so the illustrations don't take away from the overall book.

I love knowing how things work, as does my son (12). We enjoyed reading through this book and feel it would make a great reference book for mechanics. The text is easy to read and understand with no complicated language. There are plenty of photos, diagrams, charts, etc., to help the reader grasp all of the topic. While I doubt I'll ever work on my truck's engine in the depth this book provides, I do feel I could use it to understand more about it and possibly fix issues related to timing, starting, exhaust and oil. I received an ARC through Library Thing in exchange for an honest review.
