Martha Sielman

This is an amazingly different reference, a compilation of 40 quilt artists,1990's to mid-2008. The curator, Martha Sielman, described the book's underlying concept of displaying up to a dozen quilts by each of the artists as ... allowing the artists' work to be seen in much greater depth. While this does does limit the number of textile artists included in the book, I agree this approach provides a greater sense of the designer's work. It is also a book of inspiration for one's own work.

For me, this publication is a ground-breaking display of the wide range of art-quilt design. Although a few of the artists did not quilt extensively and paints or fabric -printed scenes were used, the book conveys the range of modern artwork with fabric, a concept that is rarely seen in the usual "Quilting" literature. Nary a pattern and sewing directions are to be found. The art-quilt is elevated to the realm of art rather than simply craft work, a necessary step in authenticating textile work as a legitimate entré into the art world.… (mehr)
