Head hopping is one of those things that will make me quit reading a book unless everything else in it is stellar. The first hop happened in chapter 2 - only 4% into the book - and after checking some of the reviews of friends and trusted folks I follow, it doesn't seem like anything is good enough about this book to make the hopping bearable.

DNF'ing.

This had ups and downs for me. On the one hand, I love this Boston Universe that Smith is creating. Galen and Rowen from "All of Me": were in the book, and had actual roles to play instead of just being 'hi/bye' characters which was cool.

The main story is about Pierce (Galen's cousin) who is an ER PA, and Cassidy an ER Resident. They both work at the same Boston hospital and they both have a bunch of baggage from their past. There's the usual back and forth and drama along the way and I really liked how these two characters and Galen and Rowen all fit together in the story.

Ooh, and we got an interesting look at a small character named Margot that I really liked too.

There were a couple of places where it just felt like it was endlessly wordy and it dragged for me a little.

But, on the other hand, holy crap, the Boston stuff! From the description of the reliability and speed of the T to the CVS scene. Oh, that scene was perfect. From the card to the reciept (does anyone know the secret to getting them NOT to text me constantly AFTER I've told them I don't want texts?)

In all seriousness, I really liked this book, it was the favorite of her books so far.

I was given this ARC by Netgalley on behalf of Bold Strokes Books.

This one is a hospital romance between Dr. Galen Burgess and Dr. Rowan Duncan. The author, Emily Smith, starts it off promisingly enough. Galen is Chief Surgical Resident at Boston City Hospital and Rowan is the newest intern.

It starts on July 1st, the day when New Residents (i.e. Interns) start at hospitals around the country. Galen is the still newish Chief Resident of Surgery. Rowen is one of the new Interns and previously has had a sheltered life in Texas (Oh yeah, coming from somewhere in Texas to Boston might be a little bit of fast coast east coast whiplash).

At the end of my review of 'After the Fire', which is also by Emily Smith, I wrote, "Galen Now?" and boy oh boy was this Galen's turn. Because while she falls for Rowan, Rowan's part of the story is much more complicated, mainly because she has a boyfriend, Brian, who is still in Texas.

Of course, Galen also has some baggage, having been a player for quite a while, as well as some hard core Brugess (her family) family drama.

I liked the secondary characters the most in this book. Teddy was back and Makayla was quite a character.

I liked the book for the most part. It was a nice sorta sequel to 'After the Fire' and a very enjoyable (I blew through it because I was hooked) fast read. Oh, and it was set in Boston, and that part was written perfectly, no trips from Boston to Pittsfield in Twenty Minutes. And that's always a very big plus for me.

I received this book via Netgalley thanks to Bold Strokes Books.
